Not me getting emotional in front of the students because of a 500 year old book 👀

To be fair, there were also Tudor portraits. And feminist founder lore. And Newton’s apple tree. And bridges with reputations. Naturally, I was thriving…even after driving the minibus for 6 hours across multiple motorways because Cambridge might be the least convenient place in England to get to from Devon 😅

I spent 4 hours today learning about this incredible Victorian woman - full vlog coming soon, but for now let’s just say this is absolutely somewhere you should put on your Cornwall itinerary, you won’t regret it!

Your sign to stop saying “we should go there sometime” 👀

Because Heritage Open Days is back, which means hundreds of historic places across England are opening their doors with FREE entry, special tours and events - including quite a few across the very history rich South West.

Some are places you’d normally have to pay to visit, some are opening areas you wouldn’t usually get access to, and some are just a very good excuse to finally go to that place you’ve been meaning to visit for [insert unacceptable amount of time here] 😂

I’ve pulled together a few of (imo) the best options across Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset that are still running this week - including some genuinely brilliant free-entry days 🏰

If you’re remotely history-inclined, or want to cosplay as ‘those people’ who do family days out at heritage sites, this is one of those weeks where you can have an extremely expensive-looking day out for £0.

Save this for later and send it to the person you’re always saying “we should go there” to 📩

Turns out there’s quite a lot to do in ski towns when there’s absolutely no snow involved 🙌

Today’s stop on my impulsive French Alps adventure was Le Bourg-d’Oisans - somewhere apparently only really associated with people in lycra voluntarily cycling up enormous mountains 🚲

I, unsurprisingly, did not do that.

Instead, I spent the day exploring at a much more Laurie-friendly pace, and tbh this whole part of France is making a VERY convincing argument for coming to the Alps outside of ski season 🏔️☀️

Nothing says ‘tourist’ quite as much as wearing a Breton top in France…I just need a performative beret to complete the look 🙃 In my defence, having only really visited Paris/Normandy on school trips in recent years…I wasn’t expecting to like France as much as I have and to subsequently spend an extended period of time here 😅

Stop 7: Alp be back ⛰️

I couldn’t even tell you where this place is, except the waterfall at the end is called Cascade de la Pisse (hehe 🤭) but I can tell you that spontaneous days that start with an early morning local bus don’t get better than this one 😍

In my head, I anticipated high altitude climbs and panoramic views of tiny villages hundreds of meters below me…but the temperatures were not playing ball for that particular vision 😅 instead, I found this figure of 8 trail past/around 2 lakes with a spectacular waterfall at the end and plenty of small private swim spots in water than genuinely matched my backpack. All the stress of trying to access my a level results on my mobile in the middle of nowhere at 9am, gone!

We’ve literally just arrived in Grenoble…so obviously I immediately left again 🇫🇷😂

You lot would NOT stop recommending Annecy, so after spending approximately five minutes settling into Grenoble I was back on public transport to see whether it actually lived up to the hype.

And, annoyingly for me, you were right.

Lake Annecy is incredibly pretty, the old town looks like someone designed it specifically for postcards, and I spent a large portion of the day wondering whether there might be a history teacher shortage in the area and if so could I reasonably justify moving here just based on the gorgeous colour of the water.

Naturally, because this is Eurosummer, the day also included a failed attempt to see the eclipse because apparently the universe did not check my content schedule 🌚

Still, if this is what happens when I let the comments section plan my itinerary, I may have to keep outsourcing major life decisions to you lot!

Secret question for the full-caption club: what destination did everyone hype up so much that you were CONVINCED it couldn’t possibly live up to it…then it did? 👀
