A new school year, new beginnings...

The start of a new school year can be full of excitement and opportunity—a fresh beginning that brings with it the promise of growth, new friendships, and learning experiences. For your child, it can be a time to explore new subjects, set goals, and build their confidence in the classroom. Every school year is a chance to start with a clean slate, and that feeling of possibility is something to celebrate.

If you’ve noticed your child struggling with reading, spelling or writing, considering a dyslexia assessment at the start of the year can bring clarity and ensure they receive the right support from day one. Early intervention can open doors to specialised tools, the possibility of extra time or personalised learning strategies, designed to help your child succeed. By understanding their unique learning needs, you can give them the opportunity to thrive in an environment that supports their strengths. A new school year filled with the right resources can be incredibly positive, building your child’s self-esteem and helping them reach their full potential.

What are the strengths associated with dyslexia?

A dyslexia diagnosis isn't all about the tough stuff. There are many strengths associated with a dyslexic profile which can be nurtured to ease the known disadvantages. For example, individuals with dyslexia often have unique strengths in creativity and problem-solving. They can excel in big-picture thinking, seeing connections and solutions that others might miss. This can make them stellar at innovative thinking and creative endeavours. Their journey through dyslexia can also hone incredible resilience and adaptability—skills that are gold in any challenge life throws their way. Plus, their ability to think in vivid, visual ways can be a superpower in fields like design, engineering, and the arts. Add to this a strong empathetic streak from navigating their own challenges, and you've got a recipe for leaders and innovators who bring fresh perspectives and resilience to the table.

In essence, dyslexia, with its unique set of challenges, also endows individuals with a distinctive suite of strengths—creativity, spatial awareness, empathy, resilience, and innovative thinking.

A dyslexia assessment will uncover strengths as well as weaknesses. It will outline recommendations on how best to use these strengths to support learning and everyday life.

"What might dyslexia look like in a child or young person?"

This is a question I'm often asked. Dyslexia can look different in different people but the picture below illustrates some of the areas that might be impacted.

It is important to remember that there are positives to thinking differently too and that many dyslexic people show strengths in areas such as reasoning and in visual and creative fields.

A dyslexia assessment will uncover a young persons strengths as well as their weaknesses and will make recommendations for how best to use those strengths.

Hello and welcome to Dyslexia Devon.
I'm Louise and I'm a highly motivated, creative and committed dyslexia teacher and assessor. I offer face-to-face lessons and full diagnostic assessments. I am fully qualified with a PGCE, PG Cert (SpLD Dyslexia), AMDA, APC and DBS checked. Do get in touch via email if you have an enquiry about 1:1 Dyslexia teaching and how I can support your child of if you would like to enquire about an assessment.
Diagnostic Assessment Reports: I conduct full diagnostic assessment reports in dyslexia. These take around 3 hours and a full report will be produced with recommendations for how to support your child. If your child is struggling with spelling and reading it is essential to know how best to support them and a diagnostic assessment report will pin point areas of weakness that will benefit from targeted teaching.
Dyslexia Teaching: I provide personalised, multi-sensory dyslexia teaching from my home or in schools using specialist interventions. I can help your child gain confidence and reach their full potential in reading and writing.
I have over 20 years experience of teaching in a number of different roles and in a range of settings. I am passionate about inclusivity and ensuring all children have the opportunity to flourish, reach their full potential and find their unique talents.
