My ❤️ / hate relationship with social media.

Conscious that one of my values in business is honesty and I have been shying away from talking about this subject....

I have spoken often of my love/hate relationship with social media.

When it's good it's great, but when I am having a day filled with imposter syndrome, self doubt and complete lack of faith in myself and what I am doing I cannot go anywhere near social media.

Hence I haven't really posted much in the last couple of weeks.

One of the things I always wanted to achieve with Heartspace Development is to be honest about the journey of being a business owner and that sometimes it is really really HARD.

I know this doesn't just apply to business owners, but the amount we are bombarded by all the things we feel we "should" be doing, especially in the early days of running a business can be overwhelming at best, cause anxiety, stress and burnout at worst.

Yes of course I am a big advocate of getting support in your business but today with my non business hat on - if you are struggling being a business owner today - reach out to me, because believe me I really really get it

The curse of the "Who am I to?" phrase...

I know the dreaded imposter syndrome can show up just as much in the corporate world.

But for me it returned (and still does often!) with a vengeance when I started my own business.

Who was going to PAY me to give them new business mentoring?

SO easy to have these thoughts and tell ourselves stories and often almost convince ourselves that we may as well go and get another job as it's not going to work.

My coach gives me a good reality check on the value you can bring and if you are feeling like this I encourage you to do the same...

When I reflect on it I have a lot I can offer women thinking about starting their business the truth is it isn't too shabby....

- 10 years of experience mentoring women
- £££ invested in my learning & development to pass on
- Used to working with people at all levels from my director role
- Corporate and board level business experience

People are always surprised when I say I identify as an . I am a confident introvert but an introvert all the same.

Basically I get my energy more from quiet alone time that I with constantly being with other people.

Ironic really as my old corporate life with all to do with the interiors of offices!

But I actually really used to struggle with being in the office - finding it too noisy and distracting to really achieve anything.

I found the majority of lock down working at home, working on my own (now I was self employed) pretty good overall.

It has only been in the last few months I have started missing people!! Being a solo business owner can be lonely at times I have discovered.

I have missed collaborating, being inspired by others and overcoming shared challenges together.

Which is part of the reason for my Women in Business: Live in conversation series (which starts again next Wednesday) - to connect with other female business owners as when I started I didn't really know any!

Join me every Wednesday at 1pm to hear from a female business owner, hear about how they made their move from the corporate world to setting up their own businesses and hear tips and advice from their specialist areas.

I would love to see you there!

No it's not a ni****ne patch!!

I used to get asked that a lot when I *used* to be outside my office smoking. Some of you might recognise it as a sensor which tracks my blood sugar using my phone instead of pricking my fingers every five minutes.

I don't think I have talked about being type 1 diabetic on here before...

I actually got (wrongly it turns out!) diagnosed in 2015 as Type 2 which I always felt wasn't right - I wasn't the "typical" candidate for Type 2 - I wasn't overweight, I exercised often, I ate healthy (ish!) and no amount of tablets I was prescribed were making any difference.

I really had to push various doctors to give me the simple blood test to see if I was actually type 1, which, it turns out I was.

Most people who are type 1 are diagnosed when they are children so I still a bit unusual!

Diabetes basically means you either don't produce enough insulin to break down the sugars you consume (type 2) or you don't produce any at all (type 1 and hence you inject it).

Being a new diabetic as an adult has been a complete rollercoaster!!

Luckily I don't mind needles but injecting myself at least 6 times a day can sometimes be wearing.

If I go out to eat and they take too long to bring the food I might have to eat something before it arrives to stop me having a hypo.

When I exercise I need to make sure I eat more than normal before (and reduce my insulin) for the same reason.

If I inject insulin before my meal according to what I think I am going to be able to eat but get too full I will need to top up with a coke or glucose tablets.

It sounds a right hassle and sometimes it is, but actually day to day I manage it fine and now it's just a part of who I am.

But the main reason for this is to say I am always happy to talk about it - if you have been diagnosed as T1 or T2 or may be wrongly too I think it helps to chat to someone who get's it.

⏰ The glorification of busy ⏰

The word busy used to almost be like a badge of honour in my old corporate world - if you weren't busy it meant you weren't working hard enough.

I try to practise what I preach now in my role as a new business mentor and actually take time away from my desk to reflect, plan and think away from screens.

But I do know it can be a rollercoaster in the first months (years even!) of having a new business - trying to do everything ourselves to save money, not wanting to turn down client work only to find ourselves on the rollercoaster of feast and famine income.

Often this results in not prioritising our own self development. Because journaling, taking courses and working on ourselves doesn't feel like "proper" work right?

Not in the short term no, but without solid foundations good practises, automated systems and helpful habits we can quickly and easily become overwhelmed and burnt out.

If this is you I KNOW my Entrepreneur's Essentials course can help you.

The doors are open until Sunday at midnight. Any questions please send me a message or book a meeting with me.
