Social Media Ban and the Power of Play

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced plans to ban under-16s from major social media platforms, including TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram, with the legislation expected to come into effect in early 2027.

The proposal has sparked significant discussion, with strong arguments being made both for and against the move. It has also prompted reflection within the tickit® team here at Commotion about what we do, why we do it, and why we remain so passionate about the power of play.

We wholeheartedly believe in the value of open-ended, child-led play. Childhood is a crucial stage of development, where emotional regulation, confidence, creativity and self-esteem can flourish through meaningful, hands-on experiences. When children are given the time, space and resources to explore, discover and learn at their own pace, the benefits can last a lifetime.

We see this firsthand through our photoshoots, customer feedback and reviews. Time and again, we witness how thoughtfully designed educational resources can inspire curiosity, encourage imagination and support learning across a wide range of settings. It makes us proud to be part of the educational toy industry.

As conversations continue around children's relationship with technology and social media, we believe it is more important than ever to provide opportunities for real, in-person play and connection. Creating environments where children can engage, experiment and learn through play remains at the heart of everything we do.
