The Year 8 visit to Arena Pursuits formed an important part of the Y8 curriculum and activities contributed to the development of wider skills that underpin learning across the curriculum.

Many of the challenges required teamwork, trust, and leadership and encouraged students to step outside their comfort zones in a supportive environment; helping them to build confidence, perseverance, and self-belief - skills that are essential for both academic success and life beyond the school.

Last Thursday, TGS Shakespeare Company, made up of students from Years 7-9 (with great technical support from two Year 10 Drama students) performed one of Shakespeare's best loved comedies, Much Ado About Nothing, for family and friends in the Mitchener Hall.

The cast threw themselves into their roles with huge energy, despite the heat, bringing their characters to life brilliantly, relishing all the comic moments, and working together very effectively as a company.

It was wonderful to celebrate all their hard work with a warm (in both senses of the word) and appreciative audience.

TGS celebrated Windrush Day this year with a number of different activities.

On 3 July we welcomed Ronald Nelson and his daughter Tatum Nelson Harris who came to talk to many students in Years 8 and 9 about their experiences of living in Britain. Mr Nelson (the grandfather of one of our Year 9 students) came to Britain as part of the Windrush Generation in 1965 and he talked candidly and eloquently about his experiences.

On 10 July, a range of students were fortunate to talk via Teams to Liberty Melly, Head of Learning at the Migration Museum who discussed with them the establishment of the Museum and the bigger questions around migration.

Congratulations to this student who entered the 9th New Talent Festival Competition at The Royal Academy of Music, competing against 140 participants from around the world.

She won first place in her age category in the String Solo section.

Year 12 students were inspired by visit from award-winning documentary maker Gary Janks.

Students watched a specially shortened version of the film ‘Wild Coast Warriors’ telling the story of how indigenous peoples from the Wild Coast of South Africa took on the oil giant Shell in their attempt to start oil/gas exploration.

After the film, Gary gave a brief outline of how the battle continues and its wider context in the existential crisis of climate change and loss of biodiversity. He also described his route into film making and many students were both moved and inspired by his personal journey.

Congratulations to this Sixth Form student who was invited to judge the 'Inspired by Chartwell' painting competition alongside members of Winston Churchill's family.

She is a 2024 Painting category winner of the John Downton Awards for Young Artist and judged the entries alongside a panel that included Katherine Carter, Chartwell’s Curator and Historian; Minnie Churchill, granddaughter-in-law of Sir Winston Churchill and co-author of Sir Winston Churchill: His Life and His Paintings and Serena Churchill, the great-great-granddaughter of Sir Winston Churchill.

Congratulations to this student who has been selected for the Swim England Kent County Development Programme (CDP), the first step in developing future national swimmers.

She was also one of just 10 girls selected for the 2026 South East Regional Open Water Camp, an invitation-only programme that forms part of the national distance swimming pathway.

Congratulations to these Year 7 students who have qualified to attend either the tutorial or webinar programmes run by the Parallel Maths Academy.

The Parallel Academy is a ground-breaking tutoring project aimed at increasing the number and diversity of excellent young mathematicians.

Students have to meet a number of criteria to qualify for nomination by the school, sit an online assessment set by the Academy, and attend a selection interview.
