I love a creative mathematical project :)
So exciting to see this enfold... One of my students is usually reluctant to attempt assessment questions, which we need to do a bit of for quantative data for funding.

We decided to make a board game, with lots of mathematical concepts embedded and questions, where she has made an origami cube to be the dice with 6 very different numbers on and all the questions not only feature geometry/shape they also include the concept of algebra, the number thrown being substituted. My student is happy to create all the solutions to go on an answer consertina behind the question card.

It is soooo amazing to witness her enthusiasm and because she is so engaged, the concepts are being more deeply embedded.

Loving the sunshine vibes today :)
Finally getting back to the geometric realm after a short hibernation break...realising how much I love the combination of geometric study/construction, interplay of number theory and taking deep dives into colour.
So wonderful to integrate these concepts into my teaching where appropriate.
Maths truely is everywhere :)

So satisfying when a student brings a piece of homework that they are proud of and its a visual treat :) and full of amazing maths.

This is from a super creative home schooled student. We have been exploring dividing circles acurately using a compass and ruler to deepen understanding of fractions, multiples, equivalence, leading to adding fractions and whilst this is 4 years beyond their working at level, we have simultaenously been developing GCSE sylabus constructions; perpendicular bisector, angle bisector and naming key parts of a circle.

Super excited to be back exploring maths after a wonderful summer break...my love for this process surprises me every time, now I am able to teach in the way that feels true and nourishing.

I started all three sessions on Wednesday with this lovely sequence of squares. Each took different paths:
1. Exploring the concept of area, the relationship between the area and the length of the sides (index order 2 and square root), BIDMAS, algebra (square root of x^2 =x), algebraic formulae.
Independent task- a wonderful mobile of squares hanging from a piece of dried Heather.
2. Exploring equivalent calculations and expressions leading to a geometric representation of expanding double brackets
3. Exploring sequences, an investigation into the method of generating geometric sequences and finding the nth term rule.

Having fun planning the next few group geometry sessions and potential future mixed media explorations....

Feeling the Equinox vibes, helllloooo spring 🌱 sunshine 🧡

I've been utilising the magic of mathematical games recently in many individual maths sessions to help foster logical thought, self-checking strategies, highlight concepts and deepen understanding....relationship building and for fun 😊.

Using games has had a positive impact on all students (all ages) and one student in particular who often seemed very tired after the school day is now super keen to 'master' the mathematical concept so we can have a treat mastermind time towards the end of the session....co-created improvement in engagement 🥳

I have recently been asked by a few parents for advice/support whose young people have been facing new challenges going to secondary school and in approaching adolescence.

This is a really great book that I would highly recommend....

Whilst I am unable to offer counselling sessions at the same time as maths based tuition/support, due to ethical reasons; it could be confusing for the young person as to which role I am taking on. I do utilise my training, interests and skills during explore maths sessions. The desire to be able to do this better during my early mainstream teaching years was the catalyst for my decision to train as a multi arts counsellor for three years and it has transformed my teaching approach and my ability to hold the space for a wide range of presenting behaviours.

Some key aspects I draw upon:
A contract may be drawn up and agreed upon by myself and the student (trust, containment, boundaries, expectations, support tools)
Phenomenological tracking - awareness brought to the breath, posture.
Awareness brought to language used, e.g. critical self talk.
Education around aspects of neuro diversity or how the mind processes, e.g. flight fright freeze response.
Attunement.
Dynamic movement between kinesthetic tasks, conventional written practice, games.
Empathy and support.
Playfulness
Attachment principles

Do let me know if you come across a really great book that you would recommend, I am continuously looking to improve my understanding of the mind and how best to meet and support my students.

Just realised I posted the incredible stilted Icosahedron post to my personal Facebook stream. I rarely post as I try to avoid phone activity as much as possible but I am making an intention to post here as I really do want to contribute to people seeing how amazing this realm is and to celebrate what my amazing students create and to share in their achievements.

So here goes again, an incredibly accurate and mini stilted Icosahedron created by an amazingly talented human :)

To protect the mini stilted Icosahedron, constructing a cube to contain it seemed like an interesting next step...we started drafting up the net in this week's session and I have enjoyed exploring some potential four fold constructions that might be appealing for the faces of the cube....

In GCSE maths land, another student has been moved up to top set, a move that caused great uncertainty for the student at first and reluctance. His teacher shared at parents evening that he is comfortably in the top third. Super proud of him. He is such a pleasure to teach, another awesome human.

Feeling full of gratitude for this role and the wonderful mathematical realm.

Felt like the end of an amazing chapter yesterday as the group of geometry explorers parted after two years together.
They started when they were ages 5 and 6 and now they are 8 💜
We looked through the contracts we made throughout our time together, marvelled at the incredible progress they have made in their fine motor skills, line and compass work and mathematical understanding.
We reminisced over creative sessions and we gave each other feedback on the back of our certificates.
We also had a final tour of the learning space (my home/art studio) pointing out all the shapes that we could see.
I will absolutely treasure the memories and insights throughout the journey with these incredible young minds and I hope they continue to spread their love of maths and their quote "maths is everywhere"💜
I feel like I want to acknowledge the effect this group has had on my own creative process. It gave me reason to delve deeper into the sacred geometry realm and I am forever grateful.
I originally purchased a course from Jain 108 academy on sacred geometry for children as I did not have the self belief I could create the content myself. Yet we steamed through the resources this course provided and I was soon weaving my own resources and ideas in; we were covering topics on the secondary maths syllabus with intrigue and enthusiasm. A year in and we started constructing our own patterns which opened a door into an infinite realm of possibilities, learning and magic and for me a connection to culture, tradition and travelling.
