iCatCare were delighted to attend the British Veterinary Receptionists Association (BVRA) Congress on Friday 25 September, meeting veterinary receptionists from across the UK and chatting all things feline! 😻

Our Cat Welfare Coordinator Laura delivered a lecture highlighting just how pivotal receptionists are in supporting Cat Friendly care and positive experiences in the clinic. As the first point of contact for owners and caregivers, receptionists can make a real difference to vet visits by building trust and easing anxieties for clients and the clinic team 🏥 🐱

If you’re interested in improving feline welfare and reducing stress for both cats and their caregivers, become a recognised Cat Advocate by completing our Cat Friendly Veterinary Receptionists course ➡️ https://icatcare.org/courses/cat-friendly-veterinary-receptionist

🦷 Brushing your cat’s teeth helps prevent plaque and tartar formation, keeps gums healthy and reduces bad breath.

🪥 We know brushing your cat’s teeth can be a challenge. Starting young can help them get used to it, but a cat of any age can become accustomed to brushing with a slow and gradual approach. Learn more 👉 https://icatcare.org/advice/how-to-brush-your-cats-teeth/

If your cat won’t accept their teeth being cleaned, discuss alternative options with your vet clinic and take a look at the available dental products supported by the Veterinary Oral Health Council here 👉 https://vohc.org/accepted-products/

What are hairballs? 🐱 Regular grooming means all cats will ingest their fur, which then travels along their gastrointestinal tract and is passed out in the faeces. In some cases, the fur packs tightly together and is vomited out as a ‘hairball’. They can be frequent and cause problems for some cats, whilst for others they are not a concern.

Most cats will vomit hairballs a few times in their life, but if this is happening regularly, or you notice a change in their behaviour, then seek veterinary help because hairballs can cause an intestinal obstruction. 🏥

There are a few things that can help reduce the frequency of hairballs and the associated health risks:

💧 Increasing a cat’s water intake 👉https://icatcare.org/resources/cat-carer-guide-encouraging-your-cat-to-drink.pdf

🐈 All mammals, including cats, can become infected with the rabies virus and transmit the disease to humans. 🦠 The rabies virus is spread through bites or scratches, usually via infected saliva. What should you do if you have been bitten or scratched by an animal that might be rabid?

🧼 Wash the wound with soap and water for 15 minutes
🧴Apply an antiseptic
🏥 Seek medical care

⚠️️ Infected cats may show various signs such as changes in behaviour (e.g. aggression), fever, excessive drooling, restlessness, enlarged pupils, paralysis, unsteadiness and coma. Death generally occurs within 3-4 days.

✋ Do NOT approach or handle free-roaming animals in countries where rabies is present. If you think a cat might be infected, make a note of its location and seek professional assistance as soon as possible from an animal control officer or veterinarian.

💉 Remember to check your pet’s vaccinations are up to date.

Take part in The Fur Report 2026! 🐈

Hairballs (clumps of hair/fur vomited up or passed in faeces) can be frequent and sometimes cause problems, whilst for other cats, they are not a concern.

Our friends at CVS Vets want to learn more about fur and grooming, and how this might impact a cat’s general health.

They are asking cat owners and caregivers worldwide to answer a few questions about your experience with hairballs, even if your cat has never had them 👉 https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/The_Fur_Report

Do you think your cat is lost? 🐈 It’s not uncommon for cats to wander off for a while and return home safely, so try to remain calm. Here are a few things to try if you are concerned 👇

🐾 Check your home thoroughly and call out your cat's name, try shaking a pack of their favourite treats.

🐾 Speak to your neighbours and local businesses to ask them to check their properties (like sheds, cellars, cars, hedges).

🐾 Microchipping is important so your cat can be easily reunited with you and even required by law in some countries. Keep your details up to date and let your microchip database know that your cat is missing.

🐾 Contact local homing centres and vet clinics, provide them with a photo.

🐾 Try distributing posters and spread the word on social media.
