The Bean-Nighe

The Bean-Nighe (pronounced ben-nee-yeh), or "little washerwoman," is a feared Scottish Gaelic supernatural creature and a type of banshee (bean-sìth). Found near desolate streams or fords, she washes the blood-stained clothes of those about to die, serving as a harbinger of doom. She is believed to be the spirit of a woman who died in childbirth, doomed to wash until her natural life would have ended.

Spotting her is a death omen, particularly if she is washing your own clothes, as it signifies imminent death. But, while terrifying, she can be approached. If a person surprises her, she may grant them three wishes and reveal the names of those about to die.

Some legends suggest that if a person can sneak up behind her and suck her breast, they can become her foster child, gaining the gift of "second sight". However, if she catches someone, she can strike them with the blood-stained cloth, leading to paralysis!
