🌿 Three new syrups are coming with us to the Caithness Show this weekend! 🌿

I’ve managed to squeeze in three new additions before we pack everything up:

🌸 Pink Elderflower Syrup – made with beautiful pink elderflowers, thanks to good neighbours at Rosenda’s mum’s house.

🌼 Elderflower Syrup – a fresh batch of this seasonal favourite.

🌿 Thyme, Mullein & Marshmallow Root Cough Syrup – inspired by the cough I’ve been trying to shift, so I thought I’d better make some for myself too!
Thyme from mums garden, Mullein from my own with the addition of organic marshmallow root (also used in our marshmallows), organic honey and sugars and organic Sicilian lemon juice.

The syrups are all bottled and ready to go. I just need to finish designing the labels, get them printed and onto the bottles… a job that somehow always ends up being done at the eleventh hour! 😅

🌿 This Weekend’s Arrangements 🌿

It’s Caithness Show weekend! 🎉

This Friday 17th and Saturday 18th July you’ll find Natures Path Natural Ways in the NQPM at the Caithness County Show, and we’re looking forward to seeing lots of familiar faces.

Here’s what our weekend looks like:

🛍️ Friday
Our shop at The Hidden Lane will be open from 11am–2pm before we head off to pack the car and set up at the show, ready for the gates opening later that afternoon.

🛍️ Saturday
Our Nature’s Path Natural Ways shop at The Hidden Lane will be closed while we’re at the show.

However, there’s still plenty happening at The Hidden Lane:
🍰 Whaligoe Catering will be there with her amazing bakes from 11am–1pm.
🥔 LRM Trading Ltd will also be open from 10am–1pm, so you can still pop by for your favourites.

🌿 We’ll be at the show bright and early 🤞 from 8.30am on Saturday (coffee definitely required! 😴), with:
✨ Freshly made Marvellous Marshmallows
✨ Our handmade jams, chutneys & syrups, crafted using locally grown and foraged ingredients
✨ A small selection of chocolates, snacks and favourite products from our little shop at The Hidden Lane, 7A Brabster Street, Thurso

After a few days of being under the weather and not getting much done, I’m now in full catch-up mode! It’s all systems go as I race to make a few new jams, chutneys and syrups ready for the Caithness County Show next weekend.

Freshly made and new to the shelves this week are:

🍓 Rhubarb & Hogweed Seed Jam
🌿 Rhubarb & Sweet Cicely Syrup
🥄 Rhubarb Chutney

There’s something incredibly satisfying about turning seasonal ingredients into jars full of flavour, especially when so many of the ingredients are grown, gathered or foraged locally.

These will be coming with me to the Caithness County Show next weekend, but if you’d like to get in before the crowds, you’ll find them on the shelves this week while stocks last.

Every jar is handmade in small batches using real ingredients, traditional methods and plenty of care—because great food doesn’t need artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. Here’s to supporting local, celebrating what’s in season, and continuing to . 🌿

🍓 Strawberry Marshmallows are back by popular demand… and now we’re growing our own strawberries too at Thehiddenlanethurso! 😉🌱

This week’s batch was a little more exciting than planned. 😳

Same quantities, same pan as always… but it turns out strawberry sugar syrup has a mind of its own! It bubbled right up to the very lip of the pan and almost made a bid for freedom.

Sadly, not all of it made it into the marshmallows as I had a spillage, so I ended up with a sticky strawberry marshmallow mixture all over the worktop. What a fine mess that was to clean up! 🤦‍♀️

Thankfully, there was still plenty left, so your favourite strawberry marshmallows will be waiting for you this weekend. 🍓💕

Sometimes handmade means things don’t always go exactly to plan… but they’re always made with plenty of love (and occasionally a little extra cleaning! 😅)

A little later than usual from us this week as I was feeling under the weather for a few days 🤧

Firstly, a huge thank you to everyone who visited us last Friday and Saturday and supported our wonderful guest producers.

A special thank you to Senga from The Griddle, who only made the decision on Friday morning to join us for her first time. She did an incredible job pulling everything together at such short notice, and judging by how quickly her delicious bakes disappeared, it was well worth the effort! Senga was absolutely delighted with the support you all showed her, and we’re pleased to say she’ll definitely be back with us next month.

In the meantime, you can find Senga at The Griddle (food van) on Riverside Road (between the British Legion and the Scout hall), Wednesday to Friday, 9am–2pm, serving up freshly cooked lunches and tempting homemade desserts. Be sure to follow her page to see what’s on the menu each week.

It was also lovely to welcome Jussi Stader from Jumping Goats Dairy back to her regular spot under the canopy. As always, her fantastic cheeses proved very popular. Thank you, Jussi, for joining us once again.

Now, on to this weekend…

We’re especially looking forward to treating ourselves to one of Andy & Karen’s famous pies or sausage rolls… and I’m hoping for some cake too! 😄

Good morning! ☀️

It was an early start here at Natures Path Natural Ways, making the most of the sunshine and quiet while getting this week’s fresh makes underway.

First up were our Elderflower Marshmallows. They’re already looking much better than last week’s batch! After a bit of head scratching, I realised I had added extra honey, which left them with a much heavier, wetter consistency.

Every day is a learning day! 🤦‍♀️

Fingers crossed this week’s batch sets beautifully and is ready to cut when I open the shop 🤞

We also have a small batch of fresh Mushroom Pâté chilling in the fridge. Made with chestnut mushrooms from LRM Trading Ltd, rehydrated Caithness porcini from our own foraged stash, onions, garlic, a pinch of blackthorn sea salt, freshly ground black pepper and blended with Philadelphia cream cheese. Just simple, wholesome ingredients with no artificial flavours or preservatives. As it’s made fresh, it should be enjoyed this weekend.

And finally… by popular request… Plain Rhubarb Jam! 🍓 (Well, rhubarb! 😊) So many of you have asked for a traditional rhubarb jam with nothing extra—no ginger, no vanilla, no other additional flavours—so here it is. Made with rhubarb grown in my own garden, British beet sugar and a generous squeeze of fresh lemon juice. No artificial preservatives or flavours, just simple homemade goodness.

Home now to get washed, changed and get some labels printed.
