THE SUPERSKILLS STORY:

Established in 2006, SuperSkills quickly gained a reputation for delivering high-quality construction training courses. This was recognised by local schools, employers, people wanting to start their own businesses and those wanting to repair or renovate their houses. In 2008, SuperSkills was awarded a contract by the Skills Funding Agency to deliver Construction NVQ's to people in work under the Train to Gain scheme and for Construction Apprenticeships in Bricklaying and Joinery. Following this, the business rapidly expanded and people started coming from all over the country to receive the high-quality service that SuperSkills delivers. SuperSkills is accredited by CSkills Awards (formerly the CITB's own Awarding Body) - the leading awarding body in Construction to deliver qualifications that are internationally recognised and valued by employers and individuals alike. In June 2010, Ofsted said of SuperSkills "Train to Gain programmes are particularly successful and these learners develop good additional employability skills and qualifications that significantly enhance their economic well being." All the instructors at SuperSkills have specific qualifications in their skill subject areas. Additionally, they have undertaken the necessary training and accreditation to teach people and assess their work for the purpose of achieving qualifications. We undertake NVQ Assessments in over sixty trades, so it is always worth a call because we will be able to help you get qualified! We know that some training centres will tell will tell you an NVQ may be gained purely by attending a course. This is simply not true. With the exception of those qualifications for which experienced worker practical assessment is available, requiring the tradesperson to demonstrate his or her underpinning knowledge of the trade concerned, NVQs may only be achieved if the training programme includes work based assessment. All our staff operate within the guidelines contained in the National Occupational Standards and NVQ Codes of Practice. Not that long ago, Liam Griffin, who trades as Oakwood Garden Rooms and is known as the Garden Room Guru, approached us to be assessed for the purpose of achieving his NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Site Carpentry.
He wanted to get both the qualification and a Gold CSCS card.
Because Liam has considerable experience in the Carpentry trade and his skills are readily available to see on his YouTube Channel, we were able to treat him as a 'Level 3 Jumper' - somebody who doesn't need to gain the Level 2 qualification, but can start straight away onto the Level 3.
Liam obviously didn't need any further training and we just assessed his skills based on the work he was doing.
We soon got Liam registered and after a few weeks he had supplied us with the evidence we needed to apply for his qualification.

When I'm speaking to construction workers about Health & Safety, one of the most common things I hear is:

"It's just common sense."

To a degree, they're right.

Most experienced tradespeople understand the obvious risks associated with their work and take practical steps to avoid them every day.

However, when a serious accident occurs, the HSE doesn't investigate common sense.

It investigates evidence.

A recent prosecution involved a scaffolder who fell more than six metres through a fragile roof light while working on a warehouse roof in West Yorkshire.

Thankfully, he survived, although he suffered serious injuries.

The HSE investigation found failures in planning, management and monitoring. The companies involved were fined more than £79,000, and one has since entered liquidation.

This case is a reminder that Health & Safety is not simply about avoiding accidents.

It is also about being able to demonstrate that risks were assessed, workers were trained, work was properly supervised and suitable systems were in place before anything went wrong.

Training records, risk assessments, accident reporting and safe systems of work are not just paperwork. They are evidence that a business takes its responsibilities seriously.
