Breckenbrough is a residential Special School which specialises in helping boys reach their academic, social and emotional potential. It is the only Quaker Foundation Residential Special School in the United Kingdom. The school is particularly successful at supporting boys of average and above average ability with a range of learning and behavioural difficulties, including Asperger’s Syndrome, Autistic Spectrum Conditions and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Boys come to Breckenbrough because they have been unable to thrive in mainstream education. As a result they have been assessed for an Education Health and Care Plan which states that Breckenbrough will be able to meet their needs, interests and abilities. We have a philosophy of peaceful and constructive conflict resolution and use restorative justice when things go wrong. By working together in this way we create respect, understanding, tolerance and forgiveness throughout our community. Breckenbrough provides a nurturing and therapeutic environment and is unique in working with boys and their families before, during and after their time at school. All staff have relevant and up to date training which enables them to work effectively with boys in a safe, calm atmosphere to help rebuild self-esteem, develop social skills and succeed academically. The aim is to enable all students to lead independent and rewarding lives. All staff work hard to make Breckenbrough a beacon of excellence in all aspects of its work with boys with social, emotional and anxiety problems.
