This weeks Substack is all about Allostasis. Most people are familiar with the term homeostasis, but the body does not always return to the same setpoint, it has the ability to predict and prepare us for change in our environment. If we ask it to do this too often, our load can become too much and signs of dis-ease will follow. The second section looks at some of the common herbal adaptogenics (designed for short term use) and I finish with a Vets Tale! I hope you enjoy.

We share our garden with a family of crows. This year has been a disaster for them with one adult losing it’s life and one of this years offspring being badly injured and unable to fly. Experiencing the healthy young one communicating with its stricken sibling and with me, has been a real eye opener for me, even after all the years I have worked with them. Recent research is beginning to validate the years of observations.

After 42 years as a veterinary surgeon, I will be retiring from clinical veterinary work on 31st October 2026. 🐾
It has been an enormous privilege to care for your animals over the years, and I am so deeply grateful for the trust, loyalty and friendship so many of you have shown me.
If you are looking for ongoing holistic or complementary veterinary support, I'd point you towards the British Association of Homeopathic Veterinary Surgeons (bahvs.com) and CAM4Animals (cam4animals.co.uk); both can help you find a qualified vet in your area.
If you have an open insurance claim, please make sure it's submitted and completed by end of October, and if you'd like a copy of your animal's clinical records, just email [email protected] (rather than calling, so we have it in writing).
My human consultancy work continues as normal and my Substack is not going anywhere: you will still be hearing my views and thoughts in my fortnightly posts. I have no intention of stopping my advocacy for the animals; it is just taking a different shape going forward.
The memories of working with you and your wonderful animals will remain with me for the rest of my life and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
