🚨 DID YOU KNOW? The Single Biggest Flawed Strategy For Your Dyslexic Teen's English GCSEs

Most teachers tell your dyslexic teen to read the book.

They tell them to highlight the key quotes.

They tell them to re-read the chapters for detail.

THIS IS THE BOTTLENECK.

For a brain wired for conceptual thinking, a brain that sees patterns and pictures rather than sequential lines of text, therefore, this traditional approach is detrimental. It’s like telling a Formula 1 driver to slow down and use the clutch every five seconds. It drains energy, destroys confidence, and produces zero results.

One of the KEY skills your teen can use is to focus on summaries!

The secret weapon for mastering Macbeth, Dickens, and unseen poetry is not reading every word, but knowing how to aggressively compress information into visual, kinetic, or auditory chunks.

Your teen isn't struggling because they are 'slow'. They are struggling because they are being forced to process information in the single most inefficient way possible for their genius-level wiring.

They don't need more reading. They need a system to reduce 20,000 words of text into 20 essential concepts they can master, explain, and write about with confidence. The ability to summarise will really help them get a higher grade!

This isn't an option. It's essential!

If your teen's dyslexic and heading into Year 10 or 11 this September, here's one thing that'll save them hours of stress with GCSE English Literature - stop trying to memorise whole quotes.

Seriously! Most kids get told to learn quotations word-for-word, and for a dyslexic brain that's often the hardest possible way to do it. It eats up time and confidence for very little payoff.

Instead, get them learning key words or short phrases (3-5 words max) which are tied to a theme, and practise building the quote around it in their own way each time.

It's more flexible, way less overwhelming, and it actually sticks.

This is exactly the kind of thing we'll be covering (and loads more) during my GCSE English study skills sessions…

Did You Know? 🌟

Many dyslexic students have a wonderful power of visualisation skills.

When unlocked, this becomes a vital tool for creative writing at all levels helping students picture scenes, characters and emotions vividly before the words even hit the page.

If your child struggles to get ideas onto paper, it might not be about ability.

It might be about tapping into the way their brain already works.

I know how to unlock visualisation skills!

Growth mindset isn't just a buzzword.

For neurodivergent kids and teens, it can genuinely be the difference between "I can't do this" and "I can't do this YET."

So many dyslexic and neurodivergent learners may struggle at school which is WHY we need to support them in building a growth mindset!

Growth mindset is Brilliant!

It's the understanding that abilities aren't fixed, and that struggling with something now doesn't mean you'll always struggle with it.

For a neurodivergent child, that shift in belief can be exactly what gets them trying again after a setback, instead of giving up before they've even started.

As parents and educators, the language we use really matters.

Praising effort and strategy rather than just "being smart."

Normalising mistakes as part of learning. Celebrating progress, not only outcomes.

Does your child or student need to see the plan before they can follow it?

Some learners with slower processing speeds struggle the moment a lesson starts cold.

No warning of what is coming, no anchor to hold onto, and they are already behind before the teacher finishes the first sentence!!

A simple fix that makes a real difference is giving these learners a visual handout before the lesson begins.

It might be a short list of the topics being covered, a diagram, or a few key images tied to the lesson content.

This gives them something to orient around. They know what is coming, they can follow the shape of the lesson as it unfolds, and they can refer back to it if they lose the thread partway through.

It costs a teacher or parent only a few minutes to prepare and can save a learner from that overwhelmed, left behind feeling that so often gets mistaken for not trying.

Did you know that for many dyslexic teenagers, the struggle to "put thoughts onto paper" isn't about their intellect or a lack of ideas, it's about cognitive overload.

Writing requires simultaneous mental tasks: generating the thought, organising the structure, and transcribing the words (spelling, grammar).

For a dyslexic brain, the transcription part (spelling and retrieving words) demands intense, conscious effort, severely draining the limited capacity of working memory.

This process creates a bottleneck: too much mental energy is spent fighting mechanics, causing the original complex thought to be lost or fragmented before it can be fully written down. The written output fails to match the student's true intelligence or verbal ability.

✅ The Essential Solution: Automate Transcription

The most powerful intervention is to bypass the transcription difficulty entirely and allow ideas to flow at the speed of thought.

Mandate Speech-to-Text Technology 🗣️

How it Works!

Using dictation software (available free on most computers and phones) allows the student's natural verbal fluency and sophisticated vocabulary to move directly onto the page.

The Benefit! It instantly removes the burden of spelling and handwriting, freeing up crucial working memory to focus only on content, structure, and argument.

The Result…The student can articulate complex ideas, demonstrating their true conceptual understanding without being penalised by transcription challenges.

Dictation is a fundamental accommodation for our dyslexic teens.

Some kids can hold an instruction in their head for a task, then lose it the moment you add a second step.

That comes down to a part of working memory called the phonological loop.

Think of it as a small holding bay for sounds and words.

It works like an inner voice on repeat, replaying what you just said to keep it active. But without rehearsal, that information fades within seconds.

For dyslexic learners, this loop often gets overloaded fast.

A two step instruction can vanish before it's even been acted on. That's not poor listening. It's a capacity issue.

One thing that helps is the concept of over learning.

Some kids need far more repetition than their peers before a skill becomes automatic.

That's not a sign they're behind. Once something is overlearned, it no longer needs conscious working memory space at all.

The repetition is the strategy working!

If you ask a dyslexic learner three things at once, chances are only the first one lands.

"Get your book out, turn to page 12, and underline the title" sounds like one instruction.

To a brain with slow processing speed, it's three separate commands arriving in a pile-up, and by the time they've processed the first one, the other two are gone.

This isn't a listening problem. It's a processing speed problem, and it needs a different fix.

Try breaking instructions into single steps, given one at a time, with a PAUSE to let each one land before you move to the next one.

For a lot of neurodivergent learners, this one change is the difference between "I don't get it" and actually being able to start the task.

I’ve spent my entire 30 year career supporting neurodivergent learners so I know a lot and I know what works!
