Annie .59 was a complete beginner when she started coming to .a.b.l.e a couple of years ago. And so it is especially satisfying to see the development of her work - ideas, skills and confidence.

Annie is also a photographer with a focus on landscape and she has used her own photos for some of these artworks. Moving between acrylic and watercolour you can see some recurring qualities such as that lovely blue-grey or an interest in luminosity and texture.

At the two poles of her work are, on the one hand, a real existential struggle to picture distance and the effects of distance and on the other hand a sense of up closeness. This has sometimes resulted in Annie getting confused about how to picture a distant mountain or rock as she can start to think that she is there, on that mountain, with its dark, hard surfaces underfoot and the gorse scratching at her ankles. In fact she worked for years as a walking guide in the mountains of Wales.

Yet it is precisely the confusion about recession or aerial perspective that has led Annie to achieve pictures that have a quirkiness, and sometimes an ease, that is hard won and all the more interesting for it.

I'm not going to beat around the bush! There is an exquisite genius about Meg's work. She brought this selection along on Friday afternoon and it was greeted by all the participants with absolute delight and a very thoughtful discussion ensued.

This touched on the way the works are multi-dimensional (thanks ) and the viewpoint shifts between aerial, earthbound, underground and internal. As well it was observed how they are both explosive and calming all at once. With a variety and inventiveness from one picture to another that is completely hypnotic.

There were questions to Meg about the ways the work might be informed by physical and emotional pain. This was a difficult subject but it was beautiful to see the sensitivity and safe space at work with Meg sharing the ways that these did indeed come into her work. With strong feelings about the apocalyptic state of the world as much as the physical illness that makes her everyday challenging.

Meg is also a hugely talented potter and I wish I had some images to share of these works as well and the interesting ways they contrast and complement her paintings.

Watercolour Lynn as we affectionately call her in honour of her enormous skill and knowledge about all things watercolour shared her work with the PaintAble group on Monday morning. There is something beautifully judged about the restraint in these pictures and a lovely balance between focus and blur.

Her technical proficiency, as is so often the case with watercolour, is not obvious always unless you know how tricky watercolour can be as a medium. The slight of hand and strategies necessary to achieve a certain effect need careful attention. Lynn's colour mixing is superb as well and recently she introduced me to a way to examine tiny areas of colour through a tiny square window cut in a piece of paper.

Occasionally Lynn throws in a surprise to her subject and challenges herself and us (I'm sorry not to have an image of her recent painting of barbed wire) and I'm looking forward to what might appear out of the lovely fluidity of her watercolours next.

There is an intensity about Fiona's work that is not always apparent until you get up close. We discussed this in the reflective session on Monday afternoon. How these sometimes turbulent textures make their way to the surface and imbue even a painting of a vase of flowers with a special kind of strangeness.

In the more recent works - paintings 1, 3 and the final image but one of a work in progress - this turbulence is far more pronounced impasto and stands in an interesting tension with the way Fiona gives a sense of limpid light falling on the world.

Trees are clearly a recurring subject with a repeated compositional device recurring in the earlier works. Composition is now getting more complicated but still with some great vistas and spaces to escape into beyond the visual and literal obstructions of walls and fallen trees.

Glenys has been coming to .a.b.l.e for a fairly short time but has been making art for a long time. Her work, using coloured pencils, oil pastels or acrylics, shows a beautiful focus and care - notice the skill with which she has depicted the different stages of ripeness of those blackberries.

During the reflective session on Monday we noticed that water and fruit were recurring subjects that particularly seemed to bring out the best in Glenys. She excels when drawing something solid getting a great balance between the overall form and the focus on surface textures. As well when picturing water she arrives at a brilliant inventiveness of mark-making.

Sometimes working from photos, observation and sometimes from imagination, Glenys is starting to really expand her range and be more ambitious.
