Two weeks ago, the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) in Great Britain published an article about Gen Z, and according to their research, they called them "THE SADNESS GENERATION".
They determined:
- One in 20 young people in England now report having no close friends. In 2014, it was about 1 in 100 – a fivefold increase
- Among 16-21-year-olds, the percentage of those with three or more close friends has fallen from 85% in 2012-2014 to 72% in 2023-2025. Satisfaction with the quality of friendships has also declined among younger teenagers.
- The IPPR explicitly describes Gen Z as more isolated, more affected by psychological distress, and less productive than previous generations.
Interestingly, this isn't just a report saying, "Gen Z is sad because they're on their phones." The IPPR also points to social factors: the closure of youth clubs, the effects of the pandemic, housing problems, fewer opportunities to transition into adulthood, and worsening access to support.
In my opinion, one of the modern problems in friendship is GASLIGHTING. One day, your "friend" starts ignoring you out of the blue for weeks, months or years without any explanation or even the will to save years of good relationships. As a result, you stop trusting people and avoid close relationships.
