A great way for challenging a child is to reverse the process. Give them an answer and ask them to find 3 different questions. Add challenge by:

* Ask them to change the position of the answer in each question (see picture)

* Ask them to make one question easy one of medium difficulty and one hard. This gets them to think of why questions differ in level.

* Ask them to make the questions from three different question types. For example, the next in a series, spotting the most unlike and missing in a grid of 9.

Barrier games are a great way for thinking about how 3D shapes are constructed and rotated. Like most barrier games, it is a 2 player game but can also be played via online video platforms such as WhatsApp or HouseParty.

You will need: a barrier - I've used a clipboard. Two sets of blocks. These can be anything - wooden children's blocks, Oxo cubes and Smarties tubes, even cardboard boxes (for playing on a large scale)

How to play: Player 1 builds a structure out of the blocks. Player 2 has the same blocks but can't see the structure. Player 1 then has to describe his construction to this partner, while Player 2 has to build it.

How to increase challenge:

* give Player 2 a selection of shapes. They must work out which have been used to build the structure.

* Ban Player one from saying certain words: box, corner. Encouraging them to use the more mathematical alternative

* Player 2 must build the structure rotated 90 or 180 degrees.

Synonym Square: these challenging puzzles are a great way of practising any concepts where you have to match concepts. Here I've created a synonyms version but they could be used for antonyms, covering fractions to percentages and so many more concepts.

To Make (Pg 2): Draw a grid of squares. Mine are 7cm square. On adjacent edges write synonyms. To add challenge: * Use the outside edges as well * Increase the number of different synonyms you use. I usually used 4-5 synonyms. This increases the number of ways of putting the puzzle back together.

To Play (Pg 3): Cut up the puzzle and try to put as many squares back together as possible. Adaptations: * Give yourself a timer and see how many you can do. Repeat and see if you can beat your score. This is a good way of solving problems under time pressure. * Make a second copy to race a friend. If you do this, use a different coloured card or pen to avoid mixing the packs.

This is a simple but fun game that can be used with anything that can be sorted. It could be word classification, collective/abstract/proper/common nouns, simile and metaphors, synonyms or antonyms for different words and many others. These are just a few possibilities in vocabulary based topics but there are many options in many subjects.

How to Play: Write the sorting categories on cards and spread them around the room or garden, making sure they are still visible. In the centre of the room place the cards to be sorted. Start the timer, take the first card and go and place it in the correct category. Come back and repeat with the next card and repeat until all cards are sorted. After you've finished, check each category. For any cards wrongly placed, give yourself a 3 second time penalty. Repeat the game the following day and try to improve your score.

Two or More Player Alternatives:

* Have two sets of cards, ideally in different colours (or put a coloured dot in the corner) so they are easy to sort at the end. Race each other to sort all the cards. As soon as the first player to finish places his last card stop and count up correctly placed cards.

* The players stand in the middle. An umpire calls out a word. The players run to the category they think is correct. Any player standing in the correct category gets a point. The player who got there first gets two.

The Alphabet Game is a childhood classic but is easily adaptable and therefore, a perfect tool for revision.

How to Play: Write out the alphabet and choose the topic. It could be synonyms for said/big/small, adjectives to describe a haunted house, nouns linked to the summer, adverbs, mathematical language, connectives, collective nouns, abstract nouns. The possibilities are endless.

One Player Game: Set a timer for 5 minutes and race against the clock to write as many synonyms as you can. Once the timer has completed, reset it and change your colour of pen. During the next 5 minutes use the internet or a dictionary to try to improve your answers or fill in any blanks. When marking, give one mark for any word completed using the internet and two marks for any word completed in the initial 5 minutes. You can be mean and not give any marks for incorrect spellings or 'boring words'. Complete the same activity a day or two later and try to improve your score.

Two or More Player Game: Each player completes their own alphabet. You can do this for 5 minutes or have the additional time with the internet as described above. After, read out your answers. If you have the same answer as another player you get one mark, if noone has your answer, you get two marks (if you have chosen to use the internet you can double the score of any answers got without help)
