Over the past few weeks, we’ve been exploring all things spring and farm life 🌱🚜 — and a special interest in ponies quickly captured the children’s imaginations!

So, we followed their lead… and created our very own pony experience right here at nursery 🐎✨

The children have been:
🧹 Mucking out the stables
🌈 Going on magical pony adventures
🗣️ Using their imaginations to bring stories to life

To make the experience even more meaningful, we invited a real pony to visit us! This gave the children the chance to learn new vocabulary, build confidence, and experience something truly special.

One beautiful moment that stayed with us was when a child said:
💬 “I have never seen a real horse before.”

A huge thank you to Pippa and Lilly for bringing Burt along to meet the children and for sharing their knowledge about ponies 🐴💛

Moments like these remind us why we do what we do ❤️

🌸 Mother’s Day Pampering at Little Pickles 🌸

This week at Little Pickles we hosted a special Mother’s Day pampering session to celebrate all of the wonderful mums, nans and special caregivers in our children’s lives. We wanted to make sure everyone who plays an important caring role felt included in our celebration.

The children had such a lovely time spoiling their special grown-ups. They painted nails, decorated cakes together, created beautiful floral arrangements, enjoyed having their hair styled in our little hair salon, and even made their own perfumes.

It was a really special afternoon full of smiles, laughter and lots of pampering.

A huge thank you to all of our mums, nans and caregivers for everything you do – we hope you felt as special as you truly are. 💐

📖✨ Turning Pages, Growing Imaginations – World Book Day at Little Pickles Nursery! ✨📖

Stories are a huge and much-loved part of our curriculum at Little Pickles Nursery. We believe that developing a love of books begins early, so storytelling and sharing books are embedded throughout our day. Whether it’s during group time, cosy reading moments, or spontaneous story sharing, we encourage children to explore and enjoy books as often as possible.

When we share a story with the children, we carefully plan and “unpick” the book beforehand. We think about the language within the story, particularly words the children may not have experienced before, and how we can support their understanding. We often use physical props, actions and discussion to bring stories to life and help children grasp and remember new vocabulary.

We also play with language in fun ways – such as clapping syllables in words – which helps children hear the sounds within language and build strong early literacy foundations.

It has been especially lovely this week to welcome parents into the nursery to share stories with the children. These moments help strengthen our shared love of reading and show the children how special books can be.

While some children enjoyed dressing up or bringing in their favourite books, World Book Day is really about celebrating the joy of stories, imagination and language. Seeing the children so engaged with books, characters and storytelling has been wonderful.

🥞✨ Pancake Day at Little Pickles Nursery! ✨🥞

What a fantastic week we’ve had! The children made pancakes from scratch, carefully following instructions and working together as a team. We talked about how ingredients change when mixed and heated — lots of wonderful curiosity and discussion!

After choosing their favourite toppings, we created simple tally charts to see which was most popular, explored subitising, and talked about how smaller numbers make bigger numbers.
We even held pancake races outside, developing physical skills while learning positional language like first, second and third.

A week full of teamwork, maths, communication and lots of smiles — we’re so proud of our Little Pickles! 💛🥞

🌏 Discovering the World Together: Chinese New Year at Nursery 🧧🐉

This week at nursery we have been discovering more about the world around us as we celebrated Chinese New Year together.

In Preschool, the children explored our globe and worked together to find China. This sparked lovely conversations about how big our world is and how people may live and celebrate in different ways. We were very lucky that one of our preschool children has a friend who lives in China, and they kindly shared photographs of the real celebrations — from bright red lanterns and decorations to families enjoying delicious traditional foods. The children were fascinated by his adventures and asked thoughtful questions about what he could see, eat and do.

Across the nursery, we created an environment full of opportunities to explore:

🏮 Photographs of celebrations
👘 Traditional clothing for role play
🌏 Artefacts and decorations
🥢 Opportunities to taste and explore Chinese food

The children loved dressing up, looking closely at the artefacts and trying new foods. These hands-on experiences encouraged curiosity, new vocabulary and lots of meaningful conversations.
At our nursery, learning about culture is woven throughout the year — not just during special celebrations. Through stories, family experiences, music, food, maps and shared discussions, we help children develop an understanding that every tradition is special and every family’s experiences are unique.

We are so proud of how engaged and respectful the children have been as they explored, questioned and celebrated together.

🚀🧑‍🚀🪐Space Explorers in the Making!🪐🧑‍🚀🚀

Our space adventure began with the story Whatever Next! after a child showed a strong interest in space. We started by finding out what the children already knew, valuing their ideas and using their curiosity to shape our learning.

To bring the experience to life, our teachers fully embraced the journey too—dressing up, role-playing, and making learning feel real and exciting. This helped spark imagination and deepen engagement throughout the week.

The story led to a fascination with the teddy bear, giving us the opportunity to explore jointed teddy bears from the past and how toys have changed over time 🧸. The children created their own jointed teddy bears ready for space, carefully positioning body parts and using positional language while developing fine motor skills as they used split pins to join the pieces together.

As the week progressed, the children’s interests and questions continually shaped our environment and planning, ensuring learning was purposeful and progressive, with new skills and knowledge built upon each day.

This then led us on to learning about Bob, the Man on the Moon. Alongside this, the children sorted healthy and unhealthy foods and went on to create their own healthy sandwiches, which they proudly ate themselves 🥪. They also explored facts about the moon, learning about its different faces and resolving misconceptions—such as thinking the moon gives out its own light 🌙.

The children’s curiosity continued as they learned about stars and created their own constellations, exploring shapes, sides, and corners ⭐. They then designed and built their own rockets using construction materials 🚀, finishing the journey with lots of fun squirting water at numbered aliens outside 👽💦.

This journey shows how we truly follow children’s interests, bring learning alive, and carefully adapt experiences and environments to create a progressive curriculum where every child can thrive 💫💛

🌟 🦉 Pippins’ Magical Owl Babies Adventure! ✨

Over the last few weeks, the children in Pippins have been on an exciting learning journey inspired by Owl Babies. We began with a nature walk to collect materials and set a challenge to build nests that were soft, strong, snug, and safe! The children loved exploring textures and problem-solving as they created their designs.

We also developed storytelling skills, learned fascinating owl facts, and discovered the word “nocturnal.” This led to conversations about night-time noises and reading Who’s Afraid of the Dark? to help build confidence and curiosity.

The children explored the language of size through an activity focused on using words such as small, medium, and large, supporting their understanding of comparative language in a playful, meaningful way.

They also investigated light and shadow using shadow puppets and enjoyed our interest tray filled with owl facts recorded on sound buttons.
It’s been a wonderful, enriching adventure full of imagination, discovery, and new vocabulary. We’re so proud of our Pippins! 💛🦉

🍏✨ From Tree to Juice! ✨🍎
What an apple-solutely magical day our Little Pickles had! The children set off on a crisp autumn walk through the fields, picking apples straight from the trees – the perfect hands-on harvest experience! 🌳👣🍂

Back at Forest School, they rolled up their sleeves and turned into little scientists and chefs, using their freshly picked apples to make homemade apple juice.

They followed instructions beautifully, made predictions about what might happen, and watched closely for changes as the apples transformed before their eyes. 🍏➡️🍹

And yes — they even got to taste their very own apple juice! 😋 While sipping, they also learned about the many wonderful uses of apples beyond just a tasty snack.
A huge thank you to Helen for creating such a magical, meaningful experience. 💚

This activity also supports our Climate Action Plan 🌍 — showing children the value of local, seasonal produce, reducing waste, and staying connected with nature. It’s never too early to grow green thinkers! 🌱💪

🎉 Bear Tales & Porridge Trails! 🚓📚🥣

Our preschoolers have had an amazing time diving into the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears — and it’s led to a learning journey full of fun, discovery, and real-life connections!

🧸 They explored characters and repeated refrains, dressed up as storybook characters, and even helped sort the three bears’ clothes by size — building early maths and storytelling skills.

🥄 The children also tasted porridge with different toppings, recorded their favourites using tally charts, and got messy in the mud kitchen, straining porridge and exploring textures by adding honey and syrup.

🫗 They explored capacity using different containers, learning what full, half full and empty really look like through hands-on play.

🕵️‍♀️ A surprise crime scene sparked creative thinking as the children made wanted posters and played detectives.

🚨 And the biggest excitement? A visit from our local police officer who let the children explore his police car — lights and sirens included!

💡 These rich, playful experiences help our children thrive — sparking curiosity, building confidence, and making learning truly unforgettable.
