INFORMED CONSENT ISN’T JUST A SIGNATURE ✍️

A client signing a consent form doesn’t mean you have blanket permission to do whatever you planned for the session.

Informed consent is an ongoing process.

Before treatment, your client should understand:
• What you’re proposing to do
• Which areas of their body you intend to treat
• What they might feel or experience
• Any relevant alternatives or options
• That they can ask questions at any point
• That they can say no to any part of the treatment
• That they can change their mind and withdraw consent at any time

And consent doesn’t stop once treatment begins.

If you want to change from what you agreed, or do something the client wasn’t expecting, communicate and check consent.

A client agreeing to treatment at the beginning of an appointment does not mean they have agreed to everything that might happen during it.

Good consent is more than paperwork.

Explain. Ask. Listen. Check in. Respect the answer.

That’s part of being a professional therapist.

📚 Another day of Level 4 Soft Tissue Therapy training!

Yesterday our learners covered two really important areas of their training.

🦴 Anatomy & Assessment 2 preparation
We worked through bones, bony landmarks, muscles, origins, insertions and actions, joint movements and key soft-tissue structures — with plenty of practical locating and explaining along the way.

🤲 Preparation, effleurage & safe treatment delivery
We then moved into practical skills, focusing on preparing a professional treatment environment, positioning and draping, effleurage, pressure and other technique variables, therapist body mechanics, and — most importantly — responding to the individual client.

Our approach is always about understanding why we’re doing something, not simply learning a set of techniques.

✨ And we’re very pleased to say that this current Level 4 course is now FULLY BOOKED!

It’s fantastic to see our small-group training continuing to grow and to have another group of future therapists developing their skills with us.

💭 Massage is only part of the picture.

One of the biggest additions to our Level 4 Soft Tissue Therapy Diploma is time dedicated to planning and delivering exercise sessions.

Why?

Because modern soft tissue therapy isn't just about helping someone feel better on the treatment couch, it's about helping them continue to improve once they leave the clinic.

During the day, our learners explore:
✅ Why exercise is an essential part of modern rehabilitation
✅ Using assessment findings to justify exercise selection
✅ Clinical reasoning rather than simply handing out generic exercises
✅ Planning safe, individualised 30–40 minute exercise sessions
✅ Coaching and cueing exercises effectively
✅ Progressing and regressing exercises based on the client's response
✅ Understanding acceptable pain during rehabilitation using a traffic-light approach
✅ Designing purposeful RAMP warm-ups for different clients

Rather than asking:
❌ "What exercises should I give for X?"

I encourage our students to ask:
✔️ "What problem am I trying to solve?"

That single question changes everything.

Soft tissue therapy may provide an opportunity for movement, reduce sensitivity and improve confidence, but long-term adaptation comes from appropriate loading, education and self-management.

This is the type of clinical reasoning we want our graduates to develop.

I'm not just teaching massage.

I'm developing soft tissue therapists who can assess, reason, educate and support clients through active rehabilitation.

I genuinely believe this is one of the most valuable and often overlooked areas of soft tissue therapy education.

I’m excited to announce a new practical teaching and CPD day focused on modern clinical reasoning, assessment and treatment planning for soft tissue therapists.
📅 Wednesday 3rd June
⏰ 9.30am – 2.30pm

This workshop is designed for:
Current Level 4 Soft Tissue Therapy Diploma students
Graduates
Therapists holding at least a Level 4 qualification in Soft Tissue Therapy, Sports Massage or Massage

Throughout the day we’ll work through a variety of realistic client case studies covering common presentations involving pain, tension, overload, stress-related symptoms, persistent pain and movement fear.

The focus of the day is helping therapists move beyond simply applying techniques and instead develop greater confidence with:
Subjective and objective assessment
Clinical reasoning
Understanding pain through a biopsychosocial lens
Treatment planning
Reassessment
Client communication and education
Adapting treatment positions including seated and side-lying approaches

We’ll also explore how psychological, lifestyle and social factors can influence pain and recovery, helping therapists better understand the person in front of them rather than only focusing on tissues and structures.

The aim is not just to improve your hands-on skills, but to help you become a more confident, adaptable and evidence-informed therapist, ultimately leading to a better experience for both you and your clients.

Last session on our Level 4 Soft Tissue Therapy Diploma, students were developing one of the most important clinical skills: reasoning why they choose a treatment, not just what techniques they use. 💆‍♂️📚

Using real-world case studies, we explored how to assess presentations such as plantar heel pain, neck tension, low back pain, lateral hip pain, headaches, fatigue, and movement-related fear.

Students worked through:

✅ Subjective questioning to understand the full picture
✅ Identifying physical, lifestyle, and psychosocial drivers of pain
✅ Choosing appropriate hands-on techniques and treatment variables
✅ Understanding pressure, pace, duration, positioning, and communication
✅ Using massage to reduce sensitivity, improve confidence, and support movement
✅ Reassessment markers to measure change clinically

A big focus was recognising that effective therapy is more than “releasing tight muscles” — it’s about helping people move better, feel safer, recover well, and return to the things that matter to them.

Massage therapy has changed a lot over the last decade.

Many therapists were originally trained in one of two ways:

• Spa / relaxation massage
• Deep tissue / sports massage

Both approaches can have value.

But modern research is helping us understand how and why manual therapy works in a much more nuanced way.

Today’s soft tissue therapists don’t just follow routines or rely on pressure.

They assess.
They reason clinically.
They adapt their treatment to the individual in front of them.

That’s the approach I teach on my Level 4 Soft Tissue Therapy Diploma.

As a Level 4 Soft Tissue Therapist, our role isn’t to diagnose — it’s to assess, reason, and decide on an appropriate course of action within our scope.

This presentation doesn’t scream “tear” or “strain.”
It suggests a possible mismatch between load and tissue capacity.

Palpation tenderness alone does not equal injury.

The real skill isn’t knowing lots of techniques.
It’s knowing when and why to use them.

This is the difference between Level 3 thinking and Level 4 clinical reasoning.

In a case like this, soft tissue techniques are supportive — not corrective.

The aim isn’t to “fix a tight muscle.”

It’s to modulate symptoms and improve load tolerance while we address training variables.

This is the difference between technique-led practice and reasoning-led practice.

If you’re interested in supporting people in pain, after injury, stress, or persistent discomfort, you’ve probably heard a lot about trigger points.

Here’s how I teach them on our Level 4 Soft Tissue Therapy Diploma 👇

✅ What trigger point / sustained pressure work is
• A manual technique involving sustained, tolerable pressure
• Used to modulate pain and sensitivity
• Often helpful as part of a broader treatment plan
• A way to support movement, confidence, and comfort

❌ What it isn’t
• It doesn’t “release knots”
• It doesn’t break down adhesions
• It doesn’t permanently change muscle structure
• It isn’t a standalone fix for pain

• Short-term pain reduction
• Reduced local tenderness

• “Trigger points are toxins”
• “You must eliminate them for pain to resolve”
• “Pain equals damage”
• “More pressure = better results”
