In 1868, scientists studying sunlight spotted a yellow line that did not match any known element.
That element became known as helium ⚛️
Named after Helios, the Greek god of the Sun ☀️
Helium was discovered in the Sun before it was ever found on Earth 🌍

A lot of time goes into planning the experiments, checking instructions, linking the science together, and making sure everything is ready for families to explore at home.

It’s made from graphite, which is a form of carbon.
Graphite has layers that slide easily over one another, allowing tiny particles to rub off onto the paper when you write.

Hi 👋
I’m Alison Green, the founder of Element Explorers Lab, a monthly hands-on science subscription helping children explore chemistry through real experiments at home ⚛️🧪
The idea began years ago while I was studying chemistry part time with the Open University whilst working full time in a chemical testing laboratory. I still remember the excitement of practical experiment kits arriving through the post, filled with chemicals, equipment, and experiments to carry out from home.
Years later during COVID, I saw experiment kits being sent to students again because practical work could not happen in person. Later, more and more parents and home educators were telling me their children were missing out on hands-on science experiences.
That kept leading me back to one thought:
Science should be experienced, not just memorised.
Element Explorers Lab was created to help children explore science through curiosity, experiments, and real-world learning — one element at a time.
Since launching in January, we’ve received lovely feedback from families, and exciting collaborations are beginning to grow.
