New Episode now out! Thanks to Jason from Crystal Academy - Award Winning Dance Studio Staffordshire Community Dance Project for joining me.

We covered a lot in this episode from the tips to starting out to what to look out for when organising your first dance event.

Some of these tips are useful for other types of event organisers too.

If you don’t have a hour right now to watch then please keep an eye out for more posts coming of the main bits from this episode.

“By playing, you’ll be helping us change the lives of people with brain tumours.”

When Alan’s brother-in-law, Ben, was diagnosed with a glioblastoma, they were shocked to discover just how limited brain tumour treatment options are.

Ben was fit and healthy and should have had many years ahead of him, and to see his children grow up. Devastatingly, Ben died in October 2022 aged just 49.

Alan supports The Charity by playing our Weekly Lottery. He hopes that researchers will one day find a cure for this terrible disease.

For just £1 a week, you can make a big difference to children and families affected by a brain tumour. You can find out more about how you can play by heading to the link below.

Some events survive because they become more than just an event.

In this clip from Episode 4 of Zero Wasted Words, I speak with Ian Gowing from The YOMP Mountain Challenge about how community spirit has helped keep the event alive for around 40 years.

The YOMP has been part of its local area since the 1980s. Over time, different people, volunteers, clubs and local supporters have helped carry it forward, protect its character and keep it relevant for new participants.

For event organisers, this is a brilliant reminder that long-term success is not just about marketing or logistics. It is about building something people feel connected to, proud of and willing to support.

In this clip we cover:

Why community spirit keeps events alive

How local people help protect an event’s legacy

Why volunteers matter so much to long-running events

How The YOMP stayed part of the local calendar

Why shared ownership makes an event stronger

What new event organisers can learn from The YOMP
