This week one of my home-educated students brought a small piece of fabric to our sewing session — it had a bit of family history, and he wanted to add to its story.

We realised there was just enough fabric to turn it into an accessory, so after chatting through some ideas and doing a bit of research, we landed on the perfect plan: a Japanese “Furoshiki wrapping cloth” style bag, as a gift for his Mum ❤️

Such a lovely way to breathe new life into something meaningful ✨

🌹12-year-old Fab just completed his very first garment design! 🎉
This fab-ulous new romance-style bomber jacket was upcycled from a pair of old curtains! In just over a day, Fab sketched the design, cut the pattern, and brought his vision to life. It’s incredible work for a first-time designer! 👏✨

Rework, recycle, repurpose…. Today my 12yr old home educated student reworked a skirt that was way too big into a pair of tailored long shorts complete WITH pockets 🎉 We designed, cut and constructed them all within our 3hr session. The original garment can be seen in the final image 📸

Hi I’m Nat 👋🏻 I teach sewing, pattern-making and creative design so that children and young people can make anything they imagine with fabric ✨ I encourage my students to be curious and test boundaries. The foundation of my approach sits within “child-led project based learning” so that whatever each student wants to create becomes possible.

Every project starts in a phase of design, then we move towards our final outcome, problem solving and learning as we go. Importantly every piece is created with the Childs’ own hand. I don’t seek to perfect or dominate their work. I sit alongside, guiding and sharing my knowledge and experience to assist them in their creative growth. Any little imperfections with remain within their work, capturing a full and individualised journey of learning and development.

Over the last few weeks, this 13yr old home-educated student has been working with me to design and make his own coat. We just have the zip left to install and then his masterpiece will be complete ✨

🌊 B got SO close to finishing her ocean inspired strappy halter-neck top this weekend. It’s going to be an incredible outcome for a first project AND it will have taken less than a day to both design and construct.

The fact that this top has involved a lot of advanced techniques was no barrier to allowing this young student to access her full vision. We took it one step at a time and learnt on the job. She has “ruched” a bust, made her own binding for straps, shirred using a sewing machine and this weekend we got the serger overlocker machine out to create a “rolled hem” which delicately finished the lightweight sheer fabric.

I am really forward to sharing the final outcome very soon ✨
