I can’t quite believe it’s been 3 whole years…

Just over 3 years ago, we were left with no option but to pull our middle child out of mainstream education. His mental health was deteriorating, and it felt like nobody was listening.

After doing the research and finding that there was quite a large, and growing, home educating community in Devon, we began our own home education journey.

However, we quickly realised that our child could not access most of the home education groups and resources out there due to a combination of his complex needs and school-based trauma. More specifically, a PDA profile.

I’d had to put a pin in my own teaching career to prioritise our children (we have 3 with SEND). But I realised I had the time, space, and resources to build what our children needed myself. This is where InvisAble InkEd was born.

I opened this group, originally called The Village, where I organised groups, trips, and events for home educating families with SEND in the community, with a particular focus on being PDA friendly. This was life-changing for those like us who had found themselves feeling so isolated. For a while, we had all three of our children out of education.

I had the pleasure of working alongside some wonderful humans to continue to develop this and to build our community. These beautiful individuals are now working on building their own amazing projects for the SEND community, which is so exciting to see!! 💪

Along the way, this developed into InvisAble InkEd, a specialist alternative education provision, where I have been able to use my knowledge and skills as a qualified teacher not only to support the home ed community, but also to provide a formal interest-led education package for those unable to access a school setting or home education (both private and funded places).

In these last three years, I have built a viable business which has provided life-changing support for our community, home educated my own children with SEND while battling with the local authority for appropriate education support (2 now in specialist settings, one continuing to home educate with the right resources), given thousands of pounds and countless hours to those in need of support, managed my own health challenges, and worked on my PhD.

It has been far from easy, and there have been many barriers and hurdles along the way. But when times have gotten tough, I have kept my head down and pushed on. And now…

InvisAble InkEd is now in a place where we have TWO learning bases, a thriving community, and expert staff who are just as passionate about supporting our community. We’re also an approved alternative education provider on the Devon County Council framework for Section-19 and EOTAS support! And we’re continuing to grow and fine tune our practice every day.

We’re making some BIG progress on what we have on offer for our learners, as well at the grown-ups, so watch this space because things are about to LEVEL UP! 🙌

🐌🕷🪳 CREEPY CRAWLIES ARE COMING TO THE PILLOW FORT!

💙 PLEASE NOTE THIS EVENT IS NOW FULLY BOOKED 💙

On Friday 23rd October 2026 2-4pm, the wonderful education outreach team at Shaldon Wildlife Trust will be payng us a visit with some of their creepiest of crawlies, along with some seriously spooky artefacts.

This is a low-demand social event for those with SEND aged 5-16. It is intended to be a safe social event for those who are looking for something smaller this Halloween. It is a drop-off event* with a maximum of 6 children.

We hae offered this out to our alternative education provision learners first, and we have a couple of spaces remaining which we would like to open up to the community.

Teaching rate: £40 per hour
Additional administration and training: £15 per hour

Location: Predominantly at The Pillow Fort, Teignmouth, with opportunities to work across our two learning bases, in learners’ homes, in the community and virtually where appropriate.

About InvIsAble InkEd

InvIsAble InkEd provides individualised alternative education for children and young people who benefit from a flexible, individualised and supportive approach to learning.

We work predominantly within a Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) setting and are on Devon County Council’s framework for alternative education provision.

We believe every learner deserves the opportunity to engage with education in a way that recognises their individual strengths, interests, needs and potential.

We are looking for a calm, compassionate and motivated STEM Teacher to lead the STEM aspect of our provision. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced teacher who is passionate about their subject and understands how to engage learners who may find traditional educational environments challenging.

About the Role

STEM encompasses Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. We welcome applicants with a relevant STEM subject qualification, including science, mathematics, engineering, technology, electronics or another closely related discipline.

The successful candidate will deliver engaging, accessible and meaningful learning experiences tailored to the needs of individual learners, helping them develop their confidence, skills and enjoyment of education.

Responsibilities will include:

Leading and delivering STEM learning across our provision.

Planning and delivering engaging sessions tailored to learners’ individual needs, interests, abilities and learning styles.

Working with learners on a one-to-one basis and in small groups.

Supporting children and young people with SEND, adapting teaching approaches to meet their individual needs.

Delivering sessions predominantly at our Pillow Fort learning base in Teignmouth, with occasional work in learners’ homes, in community settings or virtually where required.

Working collaboratively with colleagues to plan learning, establish appropriate objectives and develop individualised approaches.

Building positive, trusting relationships and creating calm, safe and encouraging learning environments.

Supporting learners to develop confidence, independence, practical skills and positive engagement with education.

Completing agreed administrative tasks, learner records and other relevant documentation.

Following safeguarding, health and safety, confidentiality and lone-working procedures.

You will not be expected to do everything alone. Planning will be collaborative, and teaching resources and materials will be provided. You will receive training and ongoing support, with the opportunity to bring your own subject knowledge, creativity and ideas to the role.

Essential Requirements

Applicants must:

Hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an appropriate recognised equivalent and provide evidence of their qualification.

Have successfully completed their statutory teacher induction period, where applicable, and be able to provide evidence of completion.

Have established teaching experience following qualification and induction. This is not an entry-level teaching position.

Hold a relevant qualification in a STEM subject, as the successful candidate will be responsible for leading the STEM aspect of our provision.

Be able to demonstrate experience of supporting learners with SEND, either professionally or through relevant personal experience.

Have strong subject knowledge and the ability to make learning engaging, accessible and meaningful.

Be calm, patient, understanding, empathetic and motivated.

Be flexible, creative and confident adapting teaching approaches to meet individual needs.

Be comfortable working independently as a lone worker and contributing positively as part of a team.

Demonstrate a commitment to safeguarding, inclusion, professional boundaries and positive outcomes for children and young people.

Experience of working within SEND, alternative provision or other non-mainstream educational settings would be particularly beneficial.

Applicants whose teaching qualifications or induction arrangements differ from the standard route in England should provide evidence of their recognised status and completed induction, or applicable exemption, for consideration.

What We Offer

Pay and hours

£40 per hour for teaching and learner-facing sessions.

£15 per hour for additional required administrative work outside teaching sessions.

£15 per hour for training.

Holiday pay in accordance with the applicable statutory requirements and agreed employment or worker arrangements.

This is a part-time position with variable and flexible hours. Working hours will depend on learner needs, the availability of sessions and the requirements of the provision.

Teaching, administration and training will be recorded and paid at their respective rates. Administrative tasks and training arrangements will be communicated and agreed with the appropriate member of the team.

Holiday entitlement and the method and timing of holiday pay will be confirmed in the written contract or statement of employment particulars, in accordance with applicable legal requirements.

Safeguarding and Safer Recruitment

The successful candidate will work with children and young people in a variety of settings, potentially including lone-working arrangements.

Applicants must be willing to comply with InvIsAble InkEd’s safeguarding policies, professional boundaries, risk assessments and lone-working procedures.

Appointment will be subject to appropriate safer recruitment checks, including the relevant DBS check, verification of qualifications and teaching status, and satisfactory references and employment checks.

It's the 1st of October 2026, which means we are officially celebrating The Pillow Fort's 1st birthday 🥳🤩 It has been exactly a year since we got the keys to our first ever learning base. Before this, we had been supporting learners in their homes and out in the community. Our alternative provision has continued to grow and develop rapidly throughout this time...

And now I am SO EXCITED to let you know that we have now got even more keys!! 🔑🔑

Over the next couple of months, we will be working closely with our landlord and contractors to open an additional learning space, meaning there will be EVEN MORE opportunities for SEND support, alternative education provision, home education events? and parent-carer support in Teignmouth and South Devon 🤩✨

🗺 A BRAND NEW ADVENTURE! 🗺

At first glance, you might think we're playing Minecraft, but if you look a little closer, you can see that we're actually playing... Hytale!

Hytale is a brand new block-based sandbox adventure/roleplay game on the PC. It's quite similar to Minecraft, but it has its own unique spin. It's still in development, but you can purchase and play it while it's in development, which actually supports its development!

This lucky learner had been VERY keen to play this with us. He was over the moon when he arrived to the session 🥳

One of the principles behind our approach is that we trust learners' interests and give them the time and space to see where those interests lead. At the moment, one of those interests is Hytale.

Playing Hytale isn't something we need to disguise as a lesson or justify by attaching a worksheet to it. The learner is deeply engaged with its world, ideas, characters and possibilities, and that engagement is already creating connections and inspiring new directions. One of those directions has been storytelling.

His interest in Hytale has inspired him to begin writing his own book. He isn't completing a prescribed creative-writing task; the idea is his own, and he has taken ownership of developing it.

He has already mapped out Act 1, working through the events of his story and considering how the narrative will unfold. Alongside the writing, he is hand-drawing his own illustrations, developing the visual identity of the world and characters he is creating.

There is literacy here. There is art, planning, storytelling, sequencing, character development, world-building and creative thinking. But these haven't been separated into individual “lessons” and presented to him as a curriculum.

They have emerged naturally through following an interest. And we don't necessarily know where that interest will lead next.

It might lead further into writing and illustration. It could spark an interest in mythology, architecture, coding, animation, music, geography or something we haven't anticipated at all.

That's an important part of interest-led learning.

Rather than beginning with “What educational activity can we make him do with this?”, we begin with curiosity:

“You're interested in this. Let's give you the opportunity to explore it and see where you take it.”

Hytale isn't simply a springboard we are using to get the learner to do other activities. His interest is the springboard. And we're following where it leads.
