Year 5 have had two brilliant DT days learning all about food technology, linked to our topic Eat the Seasons. The children were set an exciting design brief: to create a recipe using seasonal fruit and vegetables. From the very start, they approached the challenge with enthusiasm, curiosity and lots of creativity.
To begin with, the children used seasonality calendars to find out which fruits and vegetables are currently in season. This helped them make informed choices about the ingredients they could use in their recipes. They then went outside and harvested some of the produce they have been growing near the Year 5 classrooms, which made the experience even more special. There was a real sense of pride as they collected ingredients they had helped to nurture themselves.
The children also took part in a taste-testing session with a selection of herbs which they had also grown. This gave them the opportunity to think carefully about flavours and decide which herbs would work best in their dishes. It was lovely to see them discussing their ideas, comparing tastes and considering how to make their recipes as tasty and balanced as possible.
Once they had planned their ingredients, the children wrote their own recipes and cooking instructions. They thought carefully about each step, using clear, ordered language so that their instructions would be easy to follow. Today, they brought all of that learning together as they prepared and cooked their recipes.
As well as cooking, the children also used their computing skills to create labels for their products, adding a professional finishing touch. They ended the day by tasting their creations and evaluating their products, reflecting thoughtfully on what worked well and what they might improve next time.
It has been wonderful to see Year 5 working so creatively and confidently across so many different skills.
All of Year 5 would like to say a huge thank you to the PTA for funding their planters, seeds and plants. Being able to grow their own produce had really made this topic come alive!
