Mathematical Ability

Mathematical Ability The key to unlocking confidence in Maths is finding methods which work for you. Maths is about understanding concepts and applying them to different puzzles.

From grasping the building blocks, to conquering exams, it’s all possible with the right support. The fundamentals of Maths don’t change. In the wise words of Simon Singh (Fermat’s Last Theorem):

"Mathematical theorems… once proven are true until the end of time. Mathematical proofs are absolute." So often we struggle with Maths because we are trying to remember how, rather than unpicking why. Co

nceptual understanding is the key to building confidence in Maths. Knowing where our strengths lie is the first step to improving our ability. As we consolidate our existing knowledge, our confidence grows. As our confidence grows, we find more strengths. Then we find ourselves in a wonderful upward spiral. Working with our strengths and applying them across different topics makes learning Maths feel less daunting. With multiple ways to explain the same concept in Maths, the magic lies in finding the right method for each individual. One-to-one sessions enable that magic to happen.

I don't spend a lot of time on social media, but this post from last year popped up and I thought it was worth a share.

Never, ever feel there is a right or wrong way to do Maths. It's about finding what works for you, the way that makes sense to you. And whatever way that is... is right for you.

This is for every single student out there, no matter what age, who's been led to believe that to be a Mathematician you have to be able to do it in your head.

You don't.

Maths is about asking why, understanding concepts, and saying what if... what if we change those numbers... does our method still work?

None of things require you know your tables by heart, or be able to add and subtract in your head.

Below is a photo of my working out from a lesson I recently taught. This is what my page of working out looked like. I am not any less of a Mathematician because I wrote my 8 times table down.

If I can write everything down - as someone who has a GCSE, two A-Levels and half a degree in Maths... then so can you. The aim is to understand what you're doing. Not to do it at the speed of light.

P.s. The other half of my degree is teaching!

Today marks three years since I started my tutoring business. What a whirlwind it has been, but I have loved it all. Thank you to all the parents who trust me to help their children build confidence, in Maths, but also in themselves.
Bring on the next three years 💙

One down, two to go!
Well done to everyone who sat their Maths paper 1 today.
I know it's tricky, but try to put this paper behind you and focus on papers two and three.

Good luck to everyone sitting their Paper 1 tomorrow.
You've got this.
Remember, I believe in you.
I know you can do.
Slow down. Stay calm. Don't be afraid to abandon a question that feels like gibberish.
Some of the marks, not all of the marks.

Love a throwback to a student smashing it 😍 I love my job!

This, in a nutshell, is why I do what I do. Love your job and you'll never work a day in your life.

This is what it's all about. Not miraculously grasping a tricky concept overnight. But building confidence. Confidence which lasts beyond tutoring sessions.

I haven't tutored this student in a while, but have received this message from a parent thanking me for the lasting impact our sessions had.

This is why I do what I do.
