Little Herons Nursery

Little Herons Nursery Little Herons is the nursery class of North Curry Primary School, part of the Richard Huish Trust.

At Little Herons, we recognise that every family and child is unique. We understand the importance of children’s early years experiences and the impact it can have on their ongoing learning and wellbeing throughout life. This is why we place a priority on nurturing relationships and learning through play and exploration. Children form strong friendships with peers and secure relationships with the experienced and highly trained staff team.

🍎 “Mummy/Daddy, I’m hungry!” — again?! 😅
If your little one comes home from nursery or school absolutely starving, you’re not alone!

Children can use a surprising amount of energy throughout the day. From running around in the playground, PE and games, walking between activities, concentrating in lessons, learning new things, playing with friends and simply growing — their little bodies and brains are working hard from morning until home time. 🧠🏃‍♀️💨

So when they walk through the door asking for food, it isn’t necessarily because they haven’t eaten enough at school. Their growing bodies have genuine energy needs.

Growing requires energy too, and appetite can vary enormously from one day to the next. Some days they might eat everything in sight, while other days they barely seem interested!

That after-school hunger is a great opportunity to offer something nourishing and satisfying — perhaps a combination of protein, carbohydrates, fruit or vegetables and healthy fats, alongside plenty of water. 🥑🍌🥪

And remember: a hungry child after school or nursery isn’t a child who hasn’t eaten their food. Sometimes they’re simply a tired, active, growing little person whose body is asking for more fuel. ❤️

💛 Separation anxiety is normal 💜
Starting nursery can bring big feelings for little ones — tears at drop-off, clinginess, or finding it hard to say goodbye are all common parts of settling in.
It doesn’t mean your child isn’t ready for nursery, or that they aren’t happy here. It simply means they’re building confidence with a new environment, new people and a new routine.
With time, consistency, reassurance and lots of cuddles, those goodbyes usually become easier. 🌱
Big feelings, little people, and plenty of time to settle. 💛

As part of our *Map of Inclusivity*, we have been exploring the beautiful culture of Jamaica. We were delighted when one of our nursery families kindly brought in their steel drums for the children to experience.

The children loved listening to the vibrant sounds and having a go themselves, discovering new rhythms and instruments from another culture. To make the experience even more special, one of our child’s older siblings, who attends our school, gave us an amazing steel drum rendition of *Baby Shark* – it had everyone smiling and joining in! 🎶🦈

We are so grateful to our families for sharing their cultures and experiences with us. These moments help our children develop curiosity, respect, and an appreciation for the diverse world around them. ❤️

🏅 Sports Day Fun! 🏅

What a brilliant Sports Day we had! Our children showed fantastic enthusiasm throughout all of their races.

The egg and spoon race was full of concentration and excitement, with everyone doing their very best to keep their eggs balanced! We also had lots of fun with the bean bag on the head race and some speedy sprint races, where the children demonstrated great energy and confidence.

We are so proud of every child for taking part, and giving each challenge their all. A big well done to everyone—you were amazing! 🌟

🎶 Circle Time Fun! 🥁

Circle time is a wonderful opportunity for children to develop important social skills while having fun with their friends. Activities such as taking turns to play the drum help children learn patience, listening skills, and how to respect and encourage one another.

Through shared experiences like these, children build confidence, strengthen communication skills, and learn the importance of working together as part of a group.

We love seeing our little learners engaged, and enjoying learning through play. 🌟

💦 Water play is always a favourite at Little Herons! In the hot weather our children had lots of fun splashing, pouring, scooping, and exploring with water.

While they play, they’re also developing important skills. Water play encourages problem-solving, early maths concepts such as measuring and volume, hand-eye coordination, and fine motor development. It also supports communication as children share ideas, work together, and describe what they discover.

Most importantly, it’s great fun and provides plenty of smiles! 😊

A truly magical moment at nursery today 🦋✨

Our children were amazed to witness one of our butterflies emerging from its chrysalis! We watched carefully as it wriggled free and slowly stretched out its beautiful wings for the very first time. The excitement and wonder on the children’s faces was so special to see.

We can’t wait to set our butterflies free very soon and continue learning about these incredible little creatures together 💛
