Today is February 29th and this special date only occurs every four years during a leap year.
But why do we have leap years?
One Earth year, a complete orbit around the sun, does not take an exact number of days. It actually takes about 365.25 days. This means that there is an extra quarter of a day each year.
We need to keep our clocks and calendars in sync 09with the Earth, and its times and seasons. So we take these quarter days and make them into a whole extra whole day every four years.
Because of this extra day, the days of the week on the calendar don't just move forward by one, they jump ahead by two! Let me give you an example. Christmas Day in 2023 was on a Monday. Usually, the next year it would be on a Tuesday, right? But in a leap year, it springs forward by two days, so Christmas Day in 2024 will actually be on a Wednesday.
This is why it’s called a ‘leap’ year. Because the days leap forward by two in the calendar for the rest of the year.
Every day we learn something new, and in 2024, there's an extra day for extra learning – 366 days instead of the usual 365. Isn't that cool?

Half-term is fast approaching and we’ve got the perfect challenge for you and your child to make the most of the break and continue their learning in a fun and engaging way.
Whether you have a garden or a local park, this is a fun activity that most children will love. Just wrap up warm and head out across the week to play our ‘Nature Bingo’ game.
As each item is ticked off, your child can then write a poem or story related to each item on the bingo card, decorating it using coloured pencils or felt tips.
Use the blank square to add your own.
This encourages your child to pay attention to nature and develop their creative writing skills. By the end of the week, they should have created a beautiful set of poems or stories to decorate their bedroom walls.
