Watching The Traitors this week?
If you're studying AQA A Level Psychology 🧠 it's a great opportunity to spot some Social Influence theories in action (and great for revision too!)
Here are three to look out for:
1) Conformity
Watch for contestants changing their opinions to fit in with the majority. Are they genuinely persuaded by the group's arguments (internalisation) or simply going along with the crowd to avoid standing out (compliance)?
2) Minority Influence
Sometimes a single contestant (or a small group) becomes convinced that another player is a Traitor and refuses to back down. According to Moscovici, consistency is key. Keep an eye on whether a confident, consistent minority manages to shift the views of the majority over time.
3) Obedience to Authority
There isn't an obvious authority figure in The Traitors, but some contestants naturally take on leadership roles (like James Blunt). Notice whether others follow their suggestions and accusations without questioning them. What gives these players influence over the group - maybe his ex-military status?
One of the reasons I love Psychology 🧠 is that once you've learned a theory, you start seeing it everywhere.
So you can watch the Traitors, and do a sneaky bit of revision at the same time. Double win.
Let me know which examples of Social Influence you spot!
