The Circle of Fifths applied directly to the fretboard.
It’s the sequence of keys (or chords) where each step moves up a perfect fifth — the interval that powers rock harmony and power‑chord movement.

The Cycle of 5ths
Clockwise (up a perfect 5th each time):
C → G → D → A → E → B → F♯ → C♯ → G♯ → D♯ → A♯ → F → back to C

Each jump is 7 semitones — the same interval as the top note of a power chord (5 chord).

How to play the cycle on guitar (power‑chord method)
Use a standard root–5th power chord shape:

- Root on E string → move up 7 frets for the next 5th
- Or root on A string → same rule (7 frets up)

Example walk:

1. C5 (3rd fret A)
2. G5 (3rd fret E)
3. D5 (5th fret A)
4. A5 (5th fret E)
5. E5 (7th fret A)
6. B5 (7th fret E)
7. F♯5 (9th fret A)
…continue around the cycle.

This is the quickest physical way to feel the cycle on the fretboard.

Why guitarists use the cycle
- Natural progressions (ii–V–I, I–IV–V) come straight from adjacent positions on the circle.
Example: Dm → G → C (ii–V–I)

- Key signatures: each clockwise step adds a sharp.
C (0♯) → G (1♯) → D (2♯) → A (3♯) → E (4♯)…

The root & 5th chords = (power chords).

They contain only two notes: the root and the perfect fifth. Because they omit the 3rd, they are neither major nor minor — totally neutral.

What a Root & 5th Chord Actually Is

- Root — the note that names the chord (e.g., D in a D5).
- Perfect Fifth — 7 semitones above the root (e.g., A above D).
- Optional octave — often added for thickness (e.g., D–A–D).

This gives you D5 = D + A (+ D), G5 = G + D (+ G), etc.

Why They Sound So Strong

- The root–fifth interval is extremely consonant (frequency ratio ~3:2).
- Under distortion, this interval produces clean, reinforcing harmonics, unlike major/minor chords which create messy intermodulation.
- With no 3rd, the chord’s mood is decided by the bass line or melody — so the same grip works in major or minor contexts.

A‑string root (example: C5)

- Root: 3rd fret A
- Fifth: 5th fret D

One movable shape = every 5 chord.

Learn your natural notes on the fretboard, and open up your guitar playing.

The musical Alphabet - A B C D E F G

These notes just simply repeat on all six strings in a patern.

Two groups of notes are next door to each other E & F - B & C as they are next door to each other we call this a semitone "ST".

All the other notes have 1 fret between them F to B & C to E these are called tones "T".

Once You've learnt all your natural notes the sharps & flats are just between each note, but just focus on learning the natural notes 1st.
