This review meant a lot to me. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Over the years, we’ve been very fortunate at Ashby Road Service Station to receive lots of lovely comments about myself, my dad Graham and Grant, who’s been part of the place for many years.

But I have to say, there’s something particularly satisfying about seeing reviews like this one — because it mentions Ryan.

Ryan Cassidy joined us as an apprentice nearly 10 years ago, and I’ve had the pleasure of watching him develop into a really capable and trusted member of the team. We’ve put him through his Level 3 qualification, MOT testing, MOT management and EV training, and he’s become a very good diagnostic technician too.

But qualifications are only part of it.

From day one, we’ve tried to teach our younger staff the values that Ashby Road has always been built on: look after people, be honest with them, do the job properly and help when you can.

Katie came in understandably worried, with an engine warning light on the same day she was due to drive to the airport. The team diagnosed and repaired the problem within a few hours, and Ryan even gave her a lift home.

That’s the bit that makes me proud.

Ashby Road has a long family history, and I’m enormously proud of that. But the future of the garage isn’t just about me, my dad or the people who have been here for years. It’s about passing those standards on to the younger people we train and giving them the skills and responsibility to carry them forward.

When customers start recognising them for the service they give, you know something is working.

🔐 Modern cars are becoming harder to access – even for basic jobs.

More and more manufacturers are now fitting Secure Gateway (SGW) systems to their vehicles.

This means that jobs which used to be straightforward – such as putting the electronic handbrake into service mode for rear brake pads, resetting service information, carrying out certain calibrations or running diagnostic tests – can now require authorised access to the vehicle’s computer systems.

That’s why we continue to invest heavily in professional diagnostic equipment and manufacturer access.

Our latest diagnostic equipment gives us dealer-level or equivalent diagnostic capability on many vehicle systems, including secure gateway access where supported.

For our customers, that means we can increasingly carry out modern servicing, diagnostics and repairs in-house, without automatically having to send the vehicle back to a main dealer simply because the manufacturer has electronically protected a function.

Cars are changing – and so is the equipment needed to repair them properly.

🔧 MORE INVESTMENT AT ASHBY ROAD SERVICE STATION! 🔧

We’ve just invested in a new Autel MaxiSYS MS909, which will run alongside our Snap-on ZEUS and other diagnostic equipment.

Over the last couple of years, we’ve invested heavily in diagnostics because reading a fault code and diagnosing a fault are two very different things.

Our diagnostic assessment gives us around 45 minutes to an hour of technician time to investigate warning lights and running faults — including Engine Management, ABS, Airbag/SRS, DPF, AdBlue, charging and electronic parking brake faults.

Rather than simply reading a code, replacing a part and hoping, we follow a process using full-system scans, live data, active tests and physical/electrical testing to try to get to the root cause.

We recently had a BMW plug-in hybrid with a 12V battery issue. Further investigation pointed us towards a fault associated with cell number 3 in the main EV battery. That particular repair isn’t something we carry out, but we were able to pinpoint the problem and help the customer with the next step and a suitable specialist.

🔐 Modern vehicles also increasingly use secure gateways, meaning even some routine service and braking procedures require the correct authorised diagnostic access.

And equipment is only as good as the people using it. 🎓 That’s why I’ll also be investing heavily over the next year in ongoing training for our lads through LKQ Academy.

🔧 PETROL • DIESEL • HYBRID • ELECTRIC ⚡

The motor trade is changing, and at Ashby Road Service Station we want to make sure we keep changing with it.

The majority of vehicles coming through our workshop are still petrol, diesel and hybrid, and that remains a huge part of what we do – MOT testing, servicing, diagnostics, brakes, tyres, suspension, repairs and general maintenance.

However, we’re definitely seeing more electric vehicles coming through the doors.

I am very keen that we keep up to date with the technology entering the independent motor trade, so we continue to invest in EV training, equipment and knowledge for our technicians.

⚡ EV SERVICING, MOTs & REPAIRS

We’re now regularly carrying out MOTs, servicing and mechanical repairs on EVs, including Tesla Model 3s, Polestars and other electric vehicles.

One vehicle we see quite a lot of is the Tesla Model 3.

As these cars get older, we’re carrying out an increasing amount of suspension and MOT repair work on them.

Some of the Model 3 jobs we regularly encounter include:

Squeaks and noises from the front suspension are also something we see, as well as cars failing their MOT because of wear or play in suspension components.

We can source replacement components for many of these repairs and carry out the work here in our workshop.

BRAKES are another interesting area on EVs.

Because regenerative braking can reduce how frequently the conventional friction brakes are used, we can see corrosion and components becoming stiff or seized. We carry out brake inspections and repairs including discs, pads and attention to caliper components where required.

🔋 EV BATTERIES

Our technicians have EV qualifications and training to work safely with electric vehicles.

We don’t currently dismantle or repair high-voltage traction battery packs in-house. If a vehicle genuinely requires internal battery repair outside manufacturer or warranty support, we can advise on specialist battery repair options.

What has been interesting from our own experience is that the main traction batteries in the EVs we’ve inspected have generally been in good condition. Many battery-related faults we encounter are actually associated with the vehicle’s low-voltage battery or electrical system rather than failure of the main EV battery.

As part of our EV servicing, we can also assess available battery-health and diagnostic information to help identify abnormalities and give the customer useful information about their vehicle.

Russ’s Friday Garage Tip

Every Friday I’ll be sharing a simple piece of advice from the workshop to help you understand your car a little better, stay safe on the road, and hopefully avoid unnecessary repair bills.

This week’s tip: Don’t wait until your tyres are illegal.

Most drivers know the legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm.

What many people don’t realise is that tyre performance starts to reduce well before then. As tread wears down, especially below around 3mm, your stopping distance in wet conditions can increase significantly.

While you’re checking your tyres, also look for:
✔️ Cracks in the sidewalls.
✔️ Bulges or cuts.
✔️ Uneven wear.
✔️ Correct tyre pressures.

One thing that’s often overlooked is wheel alignment.

If your steering wheel isn’t straight, the car pulls to one side, or your tyres are wearing more on the inside or outside edge, your wheel alignment may need checking.

Poor alignment can shorten the life of your tyres, affect how the car drives and, in some cases, increase fuel consumption. Correcting it early can save you replacing tyres sooner than necessary.

A good place to start is by checking the advisories from your previous MOT or service. They often highlight tyres that are becoming worn or uneven before they become a problem.
