People Who Help Us 🚑

Every week my planned activities aim to support all 7 areas of learning set out in the EYFS, and I adapt each activity to suit the age and stage of the children in my setting.

Communication and Language: We’ve had lots of discussions about the people who help us — their job titles, how they help and why their roles are important.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development: Taking turns with the vehicles, sharing resources, working as a team and proudly displaying their creations in the window.

Physical Development: Climbing the play equipment, developing fine motor skills with play dough, and using mark-making tools and art resources daily.

Mathematics: Counting during play and spotting numbers in the environment. When we fed the ducks, the children each took a handful of bird seed and noticed the amount getting smaller — helping them understand real quantities and simple subtraction.

Literacy: Exploring new vocabulary linked to the theme and reading books about people who help us.

Art and Expressive Design: Painting faces, adding hats and drawing smiley faces with paint sticks.

Understanding the World: A visit to the park to feed the ducks, spotting a fire engine 🚒 and even meeting a firefighter and a nurse (my sister)!

I have recently introduced weekly themes to help with toy rotation, planning and ensuring everything is covered throughout the year.

Our first theme was BIRDS! I chose this as it’s a great topic to do in the winter when the trees are bare. Lots of other childminders do this theme in January too, to link with the RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch.

Activities: We made bird feeders with toilet roll tubes, peanut butter and bird seed and hung them in the garden.

I printed and laminated a checklist from Twinkl and the children ticked off any birds they saw throughout the week.

I made puzzles using cut up pictures of birds (also from Twinkl). The children could use the numbers and colours to work them out.

We went on a lovely walk in the woods looking for birds and nests.

We went to soft play (not bird related 😂 but the kids loved running around and it helped with nap time too 😁).

Books: Owl Babies, Jonty Gentoo and a counting book that featured birds.

Songs: 2 Little Dickie Birds, 5 Little Ducks

I made a bauble for you,
to hang on the Christmas tree. 🎄
The ribbon is very special,
as it’s the same height as me! ✨

Today was our last day before the Christmas break…

The children took home their Christmas crafts, a ribbon bauble and a gift from me. 🎁

I saw the idea for the ribbon baubles online and made a poem to go with them. I’m really pleased with how they turned out.

Wishing you all a lovely Christmas and a Happy New Year!

I look forward to more fun and adventures with my Little Daisies in 2025! 🌼
