Today I have been reminded of an inspirational quote from JFK when speaking about the moon landing:
.."we choose to go to the moon and do other things not because they are easy but because they are hard."

This is ultimately the goal for all my children: to understand that if we push through the things that are hard, we can achieve great things.

They may not always see it my way to begin with, but hopefully in time....!

A Happy New Year to you all!

Wishing all children a great start to the year. Parents, make it your aim to enable your children to be children. There is plenty of time ahead for them to learn about the adult world, but that time is not their childhood.

Children have a right to be fundamentally happy, contented, carefree and 'childish'.

Good luck to you all and a happy 2024!

Hi everyone!
Not posted for a while but this one is worth it from today:

Maths problem solving time again. It went like this:

Dan's gran knits 1 sock every day. How long will it take her to knit 4 pairs?

Reply: 8 days
Me: Great, well done. How did you get that?
Reply: Ahh, but it's not 8 actually
Me: Why?
Reply: Because (pause) she'll have to change the wool, maybe even the pattern...
Me: Oh you are funny!
Reply: And (extended pause) if she wants to go out and buy more wool, that'll take another few days. Plus.... if they're out of stock or it has to be delivered...
Me: STOP! ENOUGH!

If you're in any doubt reading this, this was a serious attempt at answering the original question! I love this job!!

A warm-up activity of a game of 'Headbanz' went like this...

(child wearing a picture of a fence on head)
Child : Is it an animal?
Me: No
Child : Is it food?
Me: No
Child: Is it an object?
Me: Yes

At this point I thought a little test was in order, so popped out of the room for a second. On my return, things progressed quickly...

Child : Is it a fence!?
Me: Wow! How did you get it so quickly?
Child : Well, you said it wasn't an animal, it wasn't food, but it was an object, so it had to be a fence!!

Genius! But failed the cheating test 🤣

Love this logic...

After going through a maths question which was incorrect, my pupil said " it's good to get some answers wrong."

"Why is that?" I asked.

"Because then you can prove to your teacher that you knew it all along."

"How can you do that?" I asked.

"When they ask you to redo it, you show them how it's done!" he replied, whilst copying the answer we had just been through together and proudly showing it to me 😆🤦‍♀️

This week's funny encounter:

Whilst admiring a vibrantly coloured display of pictures in a school, a young chap passed by, greeted me 'Good Afternoon' (it was morning), clocked me looking at the art work, and asked whether I liked the Halloween pictures.

'Halloween?!' I asked quizzically.
'Yes,' he replied. 'All those orange faces.'
'They're not Halloween pictures', I replied. 'Those are portraits of the Queen.'

A little gem to welcome me back today -
Time was running out at the end of the lesson and the pupil was desperately trying to finish.

Me: Could I help and do a little bit for you?
Child: No (shaking head fiercely). I'm not sure you'll keep it in the lines.

Such faith in their teacher! 🤣🤣
