πŸ’Ž Not all heroes wear capes; some wear rhinestones and cowboy boots πŸ‘’

Not my usual post, but some news today has really hit me hard, because we've lost a hero that dedicated their life to others and helping others, including children across the globe.

Dolly Parton has devoted a significant portion of her philanthropy to helping children, especially through education and literacy.

Here are a few things this incredible lady has done in her 80 years on the planet:

🌟1. Dolly Parton's Imagination Library
Her best-known charitable initiative is "Dolly Parton's Imagination Library", launched in 1995 in her hometown county of Sevier County, Tennessee. The program provides free, age-appropriate books to children from birth until age five, regardless of family income. It was inspired by her father's inability to read and write and aims to foster a lifelong love of reading.

What began as a local effort has expanded internationally, serving children in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the Republic of Ireland.

🌟2. The Dollywood Foundation
Parton founded "The Dollywood Foundation" in 1988 to improve educational outcomes for children in her home community. The foundation's early work focused on helping students stay in school and graduate.

The Buddy Program
One of the foundation's first major efforts was the "Buddy Program", which encouraged middle-school students to complete high school by offering financial incentives for graduation. According to the foundation, the program significantly reduced the local dropout rate among participating students.

🌟3. Scholarships for Young People
Through The Dollywood Foundation, Dolly Parton has funded scholarships to help high school students pursue higher education. The foundation annually awards scholarships to graduating seniors and has also provided special scholarships marking milestones achieved by the Imagination Library program.

🌟4. Supporting Early Childhood Literacy
Beyond simply distributing books, the Imagination Library is designed to improve early literacy and encourage families to read together. The program's stated goal is to inspire children to "dream more, learn more, care more, and be more" through reading.

Why It Matters
Dolly Parton has often said she is especially proud of her work with children through the Imagination Library and has expressed a desire to be remembered as "the book lady." She has described helping children develop a love of reading as one of the achievements she values most.

Thanks for everything, Aunt Dolly β€οΈπŸ’ŽπŸ‘’

What an amazing bunch of year 11 tutees I had this year. Every single one of them should be so proud of themselves. I am definitely proud of them and the progress they made, but just getting to know them has been such a pleasure!

Here's just a handful of messages I've received today, and I've not been able to hold back tears! Even got a few visits too which resulted in instant crying πŸ˜‚.

Hopefully everyone is out celebrating their results - you all deserve it! πŸ₯³πŸŽŠπŸ₯‚

🩡 GCSE Results Day 🌟

Well done to all those who opened up those letters today!

Remember, no matter what you achieved, your worth isn't defined by those numbers.

You are all incredible, no matter what the outcome!

And to my amazing Year 11 Tutees - you have been an incredible year to teach and I am so proud of you all.

🩡 Proud Tutor Moment πŸ‘©β€πŸ«

One of my incredible tutees received their GCSE results today and this was the message I received from her mum.

Not afraid to say I shed a little tear, because this girl has been through so much and she deserves every success. I thought I was strong, but oh my gosh this girl, strongest I've ever met. Not only did she work her socks off, she was the kindest, loveliest tutee and I know she do amazing things in her future!

This is why I love my job. These moments remind me why I do what I do.

GCSE Results day for the rest of the country is Thursday - stay tuned! 🩡

🩡 Problem Solving - Solved 🫑

Today's 5-a-day from Corbett Maths had a brilliant question for my Platinum KS2 (going into KS3) student, that was algebra disguised as lengths of shapes!

I cut up the shapes to match the diagram, which allowed us to collect the numbers together, and the unknowns together to them be able to compare the top with the bottom.

Excellent example of a visual representation of algebra, applied to a problem solving scenario! Pupils are more likely to remember maths that they have discovered for themselves.

Loved today's sessions with all my tutees, and looking forward to tomorrow's sessions!! ☺️

🩡 Personalised Learning for All Learners πŸ‘©β€πŸ«

The aftermath of one of my sessions this morning, a very personalised lesson based on what the learner needed, and I had the best time! They worked so hard, learnt so much by their own investigative skills, to the point where they asked me to step back to let them have a go - and they got it right! A confidence they have gained from trusting the process and trusting themselves.

On the desk:

πŸ“ tutor notes - topics from Skills Checks and then what to improve
πŸͺ€ fidget toys - put out without shame or embarrassment
⏳️ timer - to help with focus and motivation (way more visual, especially for ADHD learners who struggle with the concept of time)
πŸ”’ times table wheels - to remove cognitive load when practising other skills

All these resources that are readily available in my sessions without question that may not be available in a classroom. Tutoring allows tailoring to each individual child, with no judgement attached.

Well done to this tutee for being a prime example of how every child can succeed if given the right opportunities, patience and tools. You are amazing! πŸ’•

🧊Visualisation in Mathematics 🟨

Before finding the surface area and volume of cuboids, we began with plans and elevations. This included doing some isometric drawings on triangle and dot paper.

Not as easy as it looks, but looks so cool! Next, we'll get my pupil to write their name on isometric paper.

Visualisation in maths is such a useful skills, but does require a bit of practise. Applying a physical object (like the use of multi-link) helps with this!

Loved today's session. Tuition isn't just about filling gaps; it can be so inspiring and have lots of different ways of approaching maths that suits the child.
