EXCITING OPPORTUNITY FOR GIRLS TO GET INVOLVED IN SPORT
🙌 Sheffield and Rotherham have been selected to pilot a new collaborative project, the ‘Big Sister’ project, aimed at engaging girls into sport and exercise.

The programme will help girls aged 9-15 years old feel ‘sport ready’ by offering free girl-focused exercise sessions, 6-month gym memberships (unlimited gym and swim) and access to the award-winning Places Locker fitness app. 💪

Rotherham’s teen gym classes run Monday through Friday from 16:15-17:15 and Saturday and Sunday 10:30-12:30.

The We Move instructor led classes are running on Thursdays from 16:00-16:30 for 9-12 year olds and 16:30-17:00 for 13-15 year olds.

On Wednesday 13th July - Dr Marc Morris will be coming to speak to our students about the value of History in future careers and will also be giving students an opportunity to talk to him about his History specialism - The Middle Ages! Marc Morris has published several History books and has appeared on Historical documentaries on TV.

If students have a letter but are yet to bring in the consent slips, please do so asap. This is an amazing opportunity for students and History at Swinton!

We held our NSPCC Childhood Day on Friday 24th June 2022
and raised a wonderful £258.68.
“The NSPCC have been working to prevent child abuse for over 130 years, and we know the only way we can keep all of our children safe is if everyone works together. Schools are at the heart of towns and cities, and we need to get every school to help bring their communities together to keep children safe.”

Congratulations to all our Y13 students on their examination results. Despite COVID disruptions, 'bubble' classrooms and lockdowns our Y13 students should be very proud of their achievements. We really enjoyed celebrating with them as they secured their next steps - be that University or apprenticeships. Great to see Swinton Academy students compete with the best in the country and succeed. An amazing group of young people. We will miss them!

Swinton Academy Reads 2023!
As another year comes to an end, we wanted to celebrate our Reading Stars!
30 students will be receiving certificates and sweet treats from their Reading and English teachers, as well as one lucky, hard-working person who has won Reader of the Year - the most reading achievement points, most nominations for Reading Star of the Week, and generally being excellent at reading in all areas of the curriculum!
We also have 7 £5 Love 2 Shop vouchers which will be handed out to certificate and book review postcard draw winners, our Reader of the Year, and our Reading Bingo champ!
146 book review postcards have already been handed in! Keep them coming - deadline is the first day back in September when our new Y7s will have a chance to join the fun too!

Yesterday afternoon we took the Y8 Rounders team and Y9 Molly Beckitt to Hall Cross Academy for a game of Softball cricket. This was the girls first ever experience of the game.

The girls won by 30 runs.

It was a lovely way to end their summer sport commitment.

Yesterday afternoon, the 'A' half of Y8 presented their English work from this half term - a persuasive pitch for a product of their own design, including products, advertising, merchandise and speeches. More than 20 'companies' got up in front of the rest of the students, standing on stage in Wentworth Hall - the presentations were outstanding!

The girls came second out of the whole of Rotherham and they played exceptionally well in two difficult games.

Y12 Biology trip - Day 3 🏝️🏔️👩🏼‍⚕️👨🏾‍⚕️🦀

Yesterday, students spent the morning at Whitby Abbey before going to Boggle Hole to plan and do an investigation into the effect of biotic and/or abiotic factors on the growth and size of limpets 🌊.
Students then spent the afternoon in Whitby, where they went to the Whitby museum learning more about evolution and natural selection through fossil evidence🦴.

To celebrate the end of the Y12 Biology trip, students were each given a handmade award🥇and a SeaLife centre pen 🖊️from Mr Bell, Miss Fitch, and Miss Dobson in an impromptu award ceremony.

Some of the awards included:

⭐️ ‘HCWF Crabby Award’ (Hermit Crab Wrestling Federation) for bizarrely only finding groups of hermit crabs that were fighting the whole trip.
⭐️ ‘the David Attenborough award’ for excellent biology knowledge, enthusiasm, and participation.

Y7 student Jack Miller took part in the National Inline Hockey Tournament at the weekend. It was the top 3 teams from South, North and Central.
He played brilliantly and scored a goal while playing in a new position - defence!

Well done Jack, this is amazing! A huge congratulations from Mr Day and all of the PE team here at Swinton. 🎉

Reading Week 6 continues!
Over this week, students will receive the opportunity to complete a mini Book Review Postcard. This can be completed before the summer, but must be handed in no later than the first day back in September.
They will also be handed out to our feeder primary schools.
Each card completed will earn you 20 achievement points and an entry into a prize draw for treats and vouchers (maximum of 2 postcards per half term).

Y12 Biology trip - Day 2 🏞️🦐👩🏼‍⚕️👨🏾‍⚕️🦀

Yesterday, students spent the morning at Scalby Ness comparing biodiversity in rock pools at low tide and high tide locations 🌊. Groups found a variety of organisms including limpets, hermit crabs 🐚, and shore crabs 🦀.

Students then spent some time in Scarborough SeaLife Centre and watched the shark🦈, stingray, and otter🦦 feeding.

We then waded into the a very cold river at Forge Valley Nature Reserve🌳 where they used kick sampling to see what invertebrates lived in the freshwater river.

Reading Week 6 is here!
Every half term, our Reading Weeks focus on different elements of reading. This time, it is READING FOR PLEASURE!
Yesterday, we launched our long-awaited and often-requested READING BINGO!
Students in all years have a card which they need to complete, and then BINGO! Achievement points, chocolates, and vouchers galore!
The deadline for completion is Monday 17th July.

Monday 3rd July was Swinton's Annual MasterChef Final.
8 students made it through from the heats. The finalists were Robbie Sleight, Millie Longstaff, Amelia Marrow, Kayleigh Treloar, Ellie Bowman, Grace Bridges, Emily Auty and Jayden Denman. Each of the finalists were asked to make a 2 course meal of their own design. Dishes included spaghetti bolognese, pineapple and ginger shrimp stir fry, a homemade burger, churro bites with homemade chocolate sauce and lemon posset served with homemade shortbread. It was an incredible day and many high level hospitality and catering skills were presented throughout.
(As you will see, too, the 3 MasterChef judges were taking their tasting and judging role very seriously!).

Congratulations to Grace Bridges (3rd place), Millie Longstaff (2nd place) and 1st place goes to Amelia Marrow with the winning dish of pineapple and ginger shrimp stir fry, served with rice and Victoria sponge cake.
