🌒☀️ SOMETHING VERY SPECIAL IS HAPPENING OVER SHEFFIELD THIS SUMMER! ☀️🌒

On Wednesday 12th August, look to the skies for one of nature’s most spectacular sights — a solar eclipse! 🤩

Many parents/carers will remember the excitement surrounding the total solar eclipse on 11th August 1999 — when millions of people across the UK stopped what they were doing to watch the skies.

This time, Sheffield won’t experience totality — it will be a partial solar eclipse — but it should still be spectacular, with the vast majority of the Sun covered by the Moon at its peak (91% coverage!). 🌒

🕕 Eclipse begins: approx. 6:18pm
🌒 Maximum eclipse: approx. 7:11pm
☀️ Eclipse ends: approx. 8:03pm

And here’s what makes it even more special…

The next total solar eclipse visible from the UK isn’t until 23rd September 2090! 😳 So while August’s event isn’t a total eclipse, it’s a fantastic opportunity for our children to experience something that really doesn’t come around very often.

As it falls during the summer holidays, why not make an evening of it? Head outside together, find somewhere with a good view of the sky and watch a little bit of astronomy happening right above our heads. 🔭✨

⚠️ PLEASE VIEW IT SAFELY. Never look directly at the Sun, even when most of it is covered. Use certified solar eclipse glasses (ISO 12312-2) or a safe indirect viewing method such as a pinhole projector. Ordinary sunglasses are not safe for viewing an eclipse.

So… save the date, cross everything for clear Yorkshire skies 🤞😂 and get ready for a pretty spectacular summer evening!

"I have been blown away all year by this class. They have worked hard, challenged each other and taken everything in their strive. Their competitive nature worked perfectly to drive each other on but it was Louie who ended the year wearing the crown as King of Metaphors. Today, they presented on our Core Values and once again, you showed just what it means to be a student at Swinton Academy. Well done and good luck in Y9."

Students from all three ACET academies came together to celebrate a fantastic year of hard work and achievement at our Axiom Celebration Day.

Throughout the day, students collaborated in mixed-school Maths Circles, sharing ideas and tackling challenging problems together. They also had the privilege of attending an inspiring lecture by Professor Alex Best from the University of Sheffield, who explored how mathematics is used to model the spread of disease.

After enjoying lunch together, the day concluded with a special awards ceremony, where each academy recognised an Axiomer of the Year, alongside awards for Most Articulate, Most Adventurous, and Most Accepting, the three core values of Axiom Maths.

It was wonderful to see students so engaged, enthusiastic, and supportive of one another, making the day a memorable celebration of both mathematical excellence and the Axiom community.

Congratulations to our very own Sam Cooke for winning Swinton Axiomer of the Year and Sophie Craft for winning Most Articulate. As well as nominations for Lincoln Barrett for Most Accepting and Abigail Brown for Most Adventurous.
