The truth is... tape is OVERUSED as a replacement for proper rehab & stability training. It becomes a comfort blanket !

Read below to hear my take ….
1. When to use tape - when you are doing a proper exercise rehab program to improve stability & recover properly but are slowly, transitioning back to gymnasts & need a little help. With the right progressive program, you may need to use a brace or tape to start doing skills again for extra support, security & safety. The goal is NOT to use it long term but to wean off the tape or brace over time (this requires & PT to guide you)

2. when NOT to use tape/ use it as a replacement for
rehab! You should not be coming back from an injury & using tape chronically as a way to return to gymnastics even though you aren't ready & haven't done any injury recovery exercises. This will create a weakening in the joint & cause chronic instability!

3. When it MIGHT be appropriate long term - there are a couple circumstances….

- You have complete tears of the ligament structure, have done tons of rehab & continue to do it everyday but need support due to chronic instability that may eventually need surgery

- You experience a minor injury right before a major competition & need to have extra support to finish the tail end of the season. If you plan to rehab right after the completion of the season & DO IT RIGHT, I would be okay using a tool like tape to help you finish the season, if it is safe.

- You have joint damage & a brace provides unloading of the bone cartilage. This is mainly for knees. And is complex

- You have a genetic instability that needs support. Also complex & needs a true analysis/medical team.
