Evening, all! I'm very excited as one of my African ghost mantises (Phyllocrania paradoxa) matured a few days ago and she's turned a beautiful shade of mint green! She was pale brown on maturing but over about 48hrs she turned this gorgeous combination of colours. The detail of leaf camouflage on this species is truly incredible as are their bizarre head adornments, which are even more elaborate on males! Beautiful creatures.

Today is the fourth birthday of Pele, my beautiful and ever-popular Brazilian rainbow boa. I took this picture just a few moments ago, whilst he was in a tub as I was replacing his water tray, and I like it because it shows off his natural beauty rather than just the iridescence for which this species is so famous. If you zoom in you can still see areas of iridescence for sure, but he's a gorgeous snake even without the rainbows! He's changed so much in the last four years as you can see from the second picture, from a 27g baby who could sit across my fingertips to a 5ft+, 2kg adult snake!

Apologies in advance to any non-spider fans reading this, but one of my favourites has moulted in the last few days! This is a juvenile Brazilian black tarantula, one of the most beautiful velvety black spiders in the world. The first picture is of her pre-moult, looking decidedly grey/brown and dull, the second shows her freshly moulted next to her old exoskeleton, the third is the empty exoskeleton itself and the final picture shows her gorgeous new velvety black colouration! Stunning.

Today is the 1st birthday of my most recently-born Asian blue forest scorpions, aka Javanimetrus cyaneus. They're all doing really well a year on and I've named this one Vern, as my favourite film of all time (Stand By Me) was also released in cinemas 40 years ago today - with Vern being my favourite character! 🦂

Today has been the third of my three snake birthdays in just five days, as well as my parents' 58th wedding anniversary! Today it's the 1st birthday of Maple, my stunning tangerine Honduran milk snake. This is a slightly out of date picture as she's coming up for a skin shed and not looking her best today, but she is usually an absolute beauty!! 😍

Today is the second of three snake birthdays in five days! Margot, my stunning Australian Woma python, has turned five years old today. When I first bought her (at just five weeks old) she only weighed 65g and could fit in the palm of my hand, whereas now she is well over 3kg and measures more than 6ft long! She's consistently popular with everyone she meets and is a firm favourite of mine for sure. She is named after fellow Aussie Margot Robbie, to whom I had the pleasure of meeting and chatting at one of her film premieres in London's Leicester Square many years ago!

Today is the first birthday of Kate, my beautiful Kingsville tiger bull snake. I decided to name her Kate as she shares her birthday with Kate Bush, my absolute favourite female solo artist since my childhood! She's grown and changed so much since I received her back in November of last year and her orange colouration is getting more and more intense with every skin shed! She also has the most wonderful temperament and is an absolute joy to handle. 😍

In recent days, both of my female red-winged grasshoppers (Tropidacris cristata) have moulted to maturity and both are looking absolutely stunning! The first four pictures here were taken today, whereas the others were taken a few days ago when I found the empty exoskeleton of one of them hanging from the leaves from which she had moulted. It's hard to convey how much they've both grown during this final moult - they are absolutely enormous now, especially when compared to the males! Stunning creatures. 🦗

I can't believe I almost missed posting on World Snake Day - it's been a bit of a hectic one to say the least!! Snakes have been my favourite animals since I was a very small child and it's such a privilege to be able to share my love of their beauty and natural history with countless children & adults through my work. Here are the smallest and largest snakes in my current collection - Margot the beautiful Woma python, who will be turning five soon, and Valentina the tricolour hognose snake who is just over five months old!

Today has been the 3rd birthday of Kluivert, my super handsome adult male gargoyle gecko. Here he is, photographed earlier today! What a gorgeous chap he is. 😁
