So You Think You Don’t Like Maths
‘The problem is I don't like maths’. This is one of the quotes I hear some of my new tutees every year, and every year some of those budding young would-be mathematicians find after a few weeks or months that it turns out they do enjoy maths. If you boil maths down, at its root it is raw problem-solving. Humans have evolved to problem solve and often we enjoy doing so, such as a sudoku or crossword, or a computer game where you have to work out how to get the next level or any other competitive strategy game. People often feel they don't enjoy maths because he or she can't do it, but if you haven't done it you don't really know if you enjoy it or not; it's like saying ‘I don't enjoy sailing, I have never done it’. It's true there are some people who are good at maths and still don't enjoy it however let me tell you the journey many people experience when for whatever reason they start understanding maths better. Firstly their time in maths classes feels more productive because they can keep up with what the teacher is saying as opposed to be sitting there not understanding half of what is being said, this immediately removes an element of boredom from the classes. Secondly, as you start becoming better than your classmates or peers an element of competitiveness kicks in which is naturally engaging for most people. Thirdly, getting good results at maths comes down as much to practice as it does to understanding, so a snowball effect occurs, the better people are maths the easier it is to bring yourself to practice it, and the more you practice it the better you become. Solving a complicated maths problem by yourself using a combination of trial and error and just working it out all by yourself can be satisfying. It might not be fun in the same way as a skiing holiday but a lot of people who could never imagined enjoying maths find they do in fact enjoy it.
One GCSE pupil I had found she consistently did not enjoy maths, and did not see the point because she wished to go into childcare anyway. After a few lessons we decided that we would try and make most of the maths problems applicable to childcare related things including designing equipment like slides. In the course of one hour she went from thinking maths was her worst subject to thinking it was potentially her favourite subject.
This is not always the case. I had A-level student who ended up with a grade A at A Level. Afterward she said ‘thanks for your help in getting me the grade I needed, thank God I never have to do any maths again’. So I am not saying it is everybody's cup of tea, however you may like it more than you know.
