We’re very pleased to officially welcome Norman on board at SMAF as a full-time coach!

Norman’s journey with us started when he was just a shy 9-year-old boy, walking into Jo’s SMAF Wroughton club for the first time.

After a few years of training, he decided to give competitions a go. If we’re being fair, there wasn’t a huge amount of success to begin with! But he kept training, kept learning and kept improving.

Then Covid hit and, like so many young fighters, his competition journey was put on hold.

Over the last few years we’ve got back out on the competition circuit and Norman has gone from strength to strength. All that hard work and persistence has paid off, with him picking up English, British and European titles along the way.

His next challenge is another massive one, as he’ll be heading to Madrid to compete in his first World Championships!

But as proud as we are of what Norman has achieved as a fighter, we’re equally proud of the young man he has become. He’s polite, respectful, has a huge amount of skill and knowledge for his age, and has already shown that he can deliver some great sessions in the gym.

We’re really pleased to now have him joining the SMAF coaching team full-time.

Please give Norman the same respect in his classes that you would any of our coaches, get behind him in this next stage of his journey, and we’re sure he’ll continue to deliver some brilliant sessions for everyone at SMAF.

From a shy 9-year-old walking through the doors at Wroughton to a European Champion, World Championship competitor and now full-time SMAF coach.

Welcome to the team, Norman. šŸ‘Š

BEFORE YOU CHOOSE A MARTIAL ARTS SCHOOL… DO YOUR RESEARCH AND THINK IT THROUGH UNLIKE THIS GUY

Whether you’re choosing a martial arts school for yourself or, more importantly, for your child, don’t choose purely on price, location or how good the advertising looks.

Ask a much more important question:

WHO IS ACTUALLY TEACHING THE CLASS?

How long have they trained?

How long have they been teaching?

What qualifications do they have?

Are they properly insured, DBS checked and trained in safeguarding and first aid?

And most importantly — do they genuinely have the experience and knowledge to teach martial arts safely and correctly?

We’ve seen people described as ā€œadvanced instructorsā€ who have been training for less than two years.

For us, that simply isn’t enough experience.

Martial arts involves kicking, punching, stretching, pad work, fitness training and, eventually for some students, contact and sparring. Your instructor needs to understand technique, control, progression and how to teach different ages and abilities safely.

A uniform and an instructor title don’t automatically equal experience.

At SMAF, we believe you should look for instructors who have spent years developing their craft. Ask about their background. Ask who taught them. Ask how long they’ve trained. A reputable martial arts school should be happy to answer those questions.

And don’t automatically assume the most expensive club is the best — or that the cheapest club is giving you the best deal.

We consider ourselves a mid-range priced martial arts school. We’re not trying to be the cheapest.

We’re trying to provide quality coaching from experienced people in a safe, professional environment.

You only get one body.

And as a parent, you only get one child.

Make sure you put them in the hands of people you trust.

Do your research. Ask questions. Choose wisely
