Great news for Lydiard Park Academy students! 🎉

Students from Lydiard Park Academy met the Council’s Cabinet Member for Placemaking and Planning, Cllr Marina Strinkovsky, at Lydiard House last week following the exciting update that planning permission has been approved for the creation of new sixth form teaching facilities at the historic Grade I listed building.

Students had the chance to explore the space and hear first hand how the project will bring high quality, sensitively refurbished classrooms to the first floor of Lydiard House. Once complete, the new facilities will offer a truly unique learning environment rooted in local history.

This £700,000 investment helps safeguard the long term future of one of Swindon’s most treasured heritage sites, while giving young people an inspiring place to learn when they start using the space during the next academic year.

Bronze and On Fire: Our Speakers Lit Up the Stage!

Two teams of The Deanery’s finest travelled to Churchdown Community Centre to take part in the Rotary Club’s annual public speaking competition. Our Senior Team—Head Girl Jessica P, along with Stanley S and Darcy W—and our Intermediate Team—newcomers Mutiat B, Naisha Y and Anny C—took to the stage with confidence and flair.

Their composure remained unshaken despite Mr Marshall’s adventurous driving, which included arriving at the wrong Churchdown Community Centre (yes, there are two!) and performing a three‑point turn so precise it didn’t harm a single daffodil. (Please… don’t ask!)

And once they arrived, they delivered.

Facing tough competition from prestigious schools such as Hereford Cathedral School, Redlands High School and Pate’s Grammar School, both of our teams rose to the occasion without faltering.

Senior Team Highlights

The judges praised each member of the Senior Team:

Darcy, as Chairperson, was noted for being “clear,” especially in his strong emphasis on the word millions.
Jess delivered her speech with a “smart,” polished confidence.
Stanley impressed with his expressive delivery—particularly his well‑timed, rhetorical “really?”
Intermediate Team Highlights

Our Intermediate Team shone just as brightly:

Mutiat earned praise for her excellent volume—“making sure the people at the back can hear you!”
Naisha was applauded for effective signposting, guiding the audience smoothly through key moments in her argument with gesture and tone.
Anny and Naisha handled the judges’ questions brilliantly, offering composed, thoughtful answers that helped elevate them above several rival teams.
After a well‑earned celebratory McFlurry, all students returned to Swindon with pride—and with the memory of competing fiercely and professionally against five other talented teams.

A huge well done to all our competitors. Bronze today… maybe silver or gold next year!

Mock Magistrates' Court Competition

The Legal Eagles of LPA went up against three other schools on Saturday in the Mock Magistrates' Competition. It was great to see so many parents come along to support their children.

They did not get a conviction in their first case against Ridgeway (eventual winners) but successfully defended our client against Abbey Park in the second round thus saving Oscar from a custodial sentence. (Dad - disappointed).

The Legal Eagles put everything into the case and we are extremely proud of them.

We look forward to next year and the team are already eager to get back to work and put into practice the lessons learned this time round.

🏛️Exciting news for Lydiard House!

A £700,000 investment will be made to the Grade I-listed palladian house after the Council’s Planning Committee just approved plans for Lydiard Park Academy to use the house’s first floor rooms for a sixth form teaching and learning space.

The lease agreement will pay for upgraded facilities, support long-term maintenance and ensure that Lydiard House is kept open and accessible to the public. The stately home’s ground floor State Rooms will remain unaffected.

Up to 120 students will study in the historic house during the next academic year, helping to support the Academy following the closure of its current sixth form building.

The learning provision will also provide a more secure and sustainable future for Lydiard House by generating additional income, helping to reduce the reliance on ongoing council subsidy while supporting the long-term conservation of the site.
