Great YAC session today exploring ancient pottery and brooches. We have some incredibly skilled young craftspeople among our budding archaeologists!

A rewarding day in the field this week working with Year 9 Geography and History pupils and Year 6 learners from Bishopston Comprehensive as part of the Heritage Fund-supported Place Names Project with RCAHMW.

Using place names, historic maps, landscape surveys, and field observation, pupils explored how patterns within the landscape can reveal hidden layers of local history. Together we investigated whether a local chapel site may preserve evidence of an earlier llan — one of the early ecclesiastical enclosures that often became important centres of community and worship in Wales.

It was fantastic to see young people engaging with their local heritage through hands-on investigation, discovering how clues survive in place names, boundaries, settlement patterns, and historic routeways.

We looked at their local area, how it connected with Gower-Wales...gaining an insight as to how pupils could apply learning to better understanding early medieval Wales.

Diwrnod buddiol iawn yn y maes yr wythnos hon, yn gweithio gyda disgyblion Daearyddiaeth a Hanes Blwyddyn 9 a dysgwyr Blwyddyn 6 o Ysgol Gyfun Llandeilo Ferwallt fel rhan o’r Prosiect Enwau Lleoedd a gefnogir gan y Gronfa Dreftadaeth, gyda CBHC.

Gan ddefnyddio enwau lleoedd, mapiau hanesyddol, arolygon o'r dirwedd, ac arsylwadau o'r caeau, archwiliodd disgyblion sut y gall patrymau yn y dirwedd ddatgelu haenau cudd o hanes lleol. Gyda'n gilydd fel archwilion ni a allai safle capel lleol fod yn gwarchod tystiolaeth o lan cynharach – math o neilltuad eglwysig cynnar a fyddai'n aml yn troi'n ddiweddarach yn ganolfannau cymunedol ac addoli pwysig yng Nghymru.

Roedd hi'n wych gweld pobl ifanc yn ymgysylltu â'u treftadaeth leol drwy ymchwilio ymarferol, gan ddarganfod sut y mae cliwiau'n goroesi mewn enwau lleoedd, ffiniau, patrymau anheddau, a llwybrau hanesyddol.

Fe edrychon ni ar eu hardal leol nhw, sut yr oedd yn cysylltu â Gŵyr-Cymru... ac ennill mewnwelediad i'r modd y gallai'r disgyblion gymhwyso’r hyn a ddysgwyd i ddeall Cymru'r oesoedd canol cynnar yn well.
