The Play Therapy Dimensions Model by Lorri Yasenik and Ken Gardner is a valuable therapeutic resource for students and professionals interested in understanding and applying play therapy.

The authors present a practical framework that supports therapists in making informed therapeutic decisions based on each child’s developmental level, individual needs, relationships, and therapeutic goals.

A key strength of the model is its four quadrants, which provide a structured way of considering different therapeutic approaches and guiding clinical decision making. The quadrants encourage therapists to reflect on the child, the therapeutic relationship, the level of structure required, and the therapist’s role within the intervention.

This promotes flexibility and responsive practice rather than relying on one approach for every child. I found the concept of therapeutic decision making particularly useful because it emphasises the importance of continually assessing which intervention is most appropriate for a child at a particular stage of therapy.

The book also highlights how play can provide children with a safe and meaningful way to communicate emotions and experiences that may be difficult to express verbally.

Overall, the model offers a thoughtful, practical, and child-centred framework for effective play therapy practice.

A Little Bit About Us!

As PACT grows, we thought it was a good time to share a little about who we are and why we developed the School of Play and Creative Therapies.

PACT was founded in October 2023 by Eileen Braham, Alun John, Susannah Bradley and Jill Cooper. We met through our work, became friends and discovered that we shared similar values, morals and a vision for how we wanted to work.
Susannah and Jill have since stepped down as directors to follow other interests, but have continued to support us. We’re delighted that Susannah has now joined us to teach again!

We created PACT because we believed there was so much more to learn. We wanted to develop relevant, robust play therapy training and CPD that reflected the complexities practitioners and clients face today.

We’ve loved writing and developing our courses, working with wonderful trainers and building relationships with people around the world.

We’ve learnt that developing a company takes hard work, commitment and plenty of coffee! ☕️ We’ve faced challenges, had difficult conversations, disagreed, laughed a lot and keep moving forward.

Most of all, we’ve learnt that being authentic and kind matters. We want that to be at the heart of PACT. 💛

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to APAC.

Over many years, APAC has played a significant role in training play therapists, equipping countless practitioners with the knowledge, skills and confidence to make a lasting difference in the lives of children and young people. Its contribution to the profession has been considerable, and its legacy will continue through the many therapists it has trained.

Many of us at the School of Play and Creative Therapies began our own professional journeys with APAC. We remain grateful for the learning we received, the inspiring tutors who guided us, the relationships and friendships we formed, and the opportunities our training made possible. Those experiences helped shape who we are today.

We also recognise that recent events have left many within the play therapy community feeling hurt, uncertain and concerned. Trust is at the heart of therapeutic work and professional relationships. Where trust has been damaged, we hope there can now be openness, compassion and a genuine commitment to rebuilding it.

Our thoughts are especially with the current students facing such a difficult and uncertain situation. We sincerely hope solutions can be found that enable them to continue their professional journeys and achieve the qualifications they have worked so hard towards.

Their loss cannot simply be measured in time or money. Those of us who have travelled this path know how much of ourselves we invest in becoming therapists. Students bring their hopes, commitment, vulnerability and, ultimately, their hearts to this work. For their journey to suddenly become uncertain must be truly heartbreaking.

This is a time for the play therapy community to come together with kindness rather than division, support rather than judgement, and collaboration rather than competition.

Now is the time to rebuild trust and ensure that students, therapists and the children and young people we serve remain at the heart of what comes next.
