Thank you St David's Catholic Primary School Swansea for the invitation to speak at assembly this morning and meet with the school Senedd. We discussed a number of priorities for the children at the school and as West Cross councillors, we look forward to working with the school on these - watch this space!

I was really impressed by the engagement of all the children, learning about the Council's responsibilities and how to contact the Council with a concern or an idea.

I also passed on my congratulations to the school for becoming a School of Sanctuary - da iawn!

Very poignant moment to be at the unveiling of the memorial to all those affected by the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic today. This beautiful piece of art on the seafront is the creation of two Welsh artists who spent time with people affected in a range of different ways, including those who lost loved ones, who were part of voluntary efforts to support those in need of assistance during lockdowns or whose youth was shaped by the pandemic.

A personal one for me as I was working for Public Health Wales when the pandemic hit and saw first-hand the heroic effort of NHS and other essential services at that time. I then went on to have my first child during lockdown, an experience that has certainly shaped me forever. However, I will also always remember the remarkable way in which the community came together through the response coordinated by Mumbles Community Council to look after each other, as they did in communities across Swansea and Wales.

The memorial provides space for people to sit and reflect, talk if they want to, or take quiet time if that suits them better. I hope it will serve as a reminder of what we came through together here in Swansea and a place to fondly remember those we sadly lost.

Whitestone Primary School is celebrating a strong Estyn inspection report that highlights its inclusive ethos, effective leadership and commitment to helping every pupil thrive.

Inspectors found the school is "highly inclusive where staff place the needs of pupils and their families at the heart of school life", recognising the caring approach and strong support it provides for its community.

Inspectors highlighted the wide range of learning experiences available to pupils, noting that educational visits and visitors enrich their understanding of their local community, Wales and the wider world.

Creative opportunities in art and music were also recognised for contributing positively to pupils' enjoyment of learning.

The report identifies a number of areas where pupils are achieving well.
It found that staff develop pupils' literacy, numeracy and digital skills successfully, with younger children developing secure speaking, listening and early reading skills, while many older pupils read confidently and write successfully across a range of genres.

The school's strong Welsh ethos was also noted, with pupils benefiting from opportunities to develop and use the Welsh language throughout school life.
One of the report's standout findings relates to support for pupils with additional learning needs.

Estyn describes this provision as "a significant strength", praising staff for identifying needs promptly, working closely with families and specialist agencies, and providing carefully targeted support that enables nearly all pupils to make strong progress.

Inspectors also highlighted the Specialist Teaching Facilities, describing them as "particularly effective" in providing highly individualised support while ensuring pupils are fully included in school life wherever appropriate.

The report praises the leadership of Headteacher Bethan Peterson, stating that "the headteacher provides purposeful leadership", while staff are recognised for building positive relationships with pupils and creating "a supportive environment where they feel safe, valued and ready to learn".

Mrs Peterson said: "We are incredibly proud of this report and the recognition it gives to our pupils, staff, governors and families. Creating a caring, inclusive environment where every child feels valued and supported is at the heart of everything we do. This outcome reflects the dedication of our whole school community and our shared commitment to helping every pupil achieve their very best.”

Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Robert Smith, said: “Congratulations to all Whitestone Primary on a very positive inspection report.”

Today's visit to Mumbles Repair Cafe turned into a sewing class! So brilliant to talk to people coming from different parts of Swansea to save their household items and clothes from landfill. Huge thanks to volunteers Dave, Keith and Helen!

Mumbles Community Council runs Repair Cafe at Underhill Hub the second Friday of every month, 10am-1pm. Bring along your broken goods to see if they can be repaired - if they can, they will, for free! Next one will be Friday 9th October.

A lot of excitement at Baywood Community Centre this evening for Community Bingo, with this family winning prizes including a £10 voucher donated by RAG & BONE 👏👏

Community Bingo runs the last Wednesday of the month, doors open at 6pm, free of charge. Next one will be 30th September - get it in your diaries! 📆

We had some very happy players at Community Bingo tonight after they won prizes including a £10 voucher kindly donated by RAG & BONE café. Huge thanks to Rag & Bone, we look forward to seeing the pictures of more happy faces when the voucher is used!

Thanks to the great campaign from Tonia Antoniazzi MP, we took delivery of a box of stationery for West Cross Foodbank today. This will be distributed to families who need a bit of extra support with the costs of back to school - thanks to all who donated to the campaign across Gower! The donation box will be in Oystermouth Library for another week so please contribute if you can. 🖊️✏️🗒️

This morning we've been on the free bus down to Mumbles thanks to Swansea Council and had a great time playing Find it for the Foodbank raising money for West Cross Foodbank. Organised by the Mumbles Sea Wall Sale, it's a brilliant way to spend a couple of hours to support a good cause and get to see what's on offer from our wonderful local small businesses.
