✏️ When do we use ‘ai’ or ‘ay’ for the /ai/ sound?

👉 ai is usually found in the middle of a word:
rain • train • paint • snail

👉 ay is usually found at the end of a word or syllable:
play • stay • day • Sunday

💡 Easy way to remember:
AI in the middle, AY at the end!

✏️ When do we use tch or ch?

When the /ch/ sound comes straight after a short vowel sound, we usually use tch:

match • fetch • pitch • notch • hutch

For all other sounds, we usually use ch:

lunch • bench • march • crunch

⚠️ Watch out for the exceptions!
much • which • such • rich

These have a short vowel sound but still use ch.

💡 Remember:
Short vowel? TCH!
All others? CH!
But much, which, such and rich break the rule!

If it ends with a /v/, you must add an e! ✏️

English words don’t usually end in the letter v, so we add a silent e:

have • give • love • live • save

How to Teach oi and oy Without Confusing Your Child

Caption:
Does your child always mix up oi and oy? Here’s the simple rule they need to know:

✅ oi goes in the middle of a word.
✅ oy goes at the end of a word.

Once children understand this pattern, spelling words like coin, join, toy and enjoy becomes much easier.

Start with the curly caterpillar letters because they all follow the same movement pattern. Once your child has mastered one, the others become much easier.
