Happy 102nd birthday to Agnes Keleti, the world's oldest living Olympic champion! The Holocaust survivor from Hungary won a total of ten gymnastics medals, including five golds, at the 1952 Helsinki Games and the 1956 Melbourne Games. Keleti survived WWII thanks to working as a maid under a false identity but many of her family members were among the 550,000 Hungarian Jews killed during the Holocaust. Following the war, she was able to return to gymnastics training and won her Olympic medals at the ages of 31 and 35. Today, the energetic centenarian still prefers to look forward, asserting: "The past? Let’s talk about the future. That’s what should be beautiful. The past is past but there is still a future."

Our 14-year-old dog Abbey died last month. The day after she passed away my 4-year-old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so, and she dictated these words:

Dear God, Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick.

I hope you will play with her. She likes to swim and play with balls. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her you will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.
Love, Meredith.

We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven. That afternoon she dropped it into the letterbox at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had.

Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed, 'To Meredith' in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, 'When a Pet Dies.' Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page were the picture of Abbey & Meredith and this note:

Dear Meredith, Abbey arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help and I recognized her right away.

Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don't need our bodies in heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep your picture in so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by.

Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank you."

Doddie Weir died today at the age of 52.

“This portrait shows former rugby union player Doddie Weir standing in the Scottish Borders where he grew up, with the Eildon Hills near Melrose behind him.

“Weir played for Stewart’s Melville RFC, Melrose RFC, Newcastle Falcons and the Border Reivers. He earned sixty-one caps for Scotland between 1990 and 2000, played in three World Cups and was selected for the British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa in 1997.

“He was famously described by the legendary commentator Bill McLaren whilst on a forward run for Scotland, as being 'on the charge like a mad giraffe.'

“In 2017 Weir was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease (MND). He set up the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation which raises funds to aid research into the causes of MND and makes grants to individuals suffering from MND to enable them to live as fulfilled a life as possible.

“In this portrait he wears one of his famous suits in the Doddie’5 Tartan.”

Countdown to Christmas! The Call the Midwife Christmas Special of 1967 will soon be here! ❤️🎄🎅🙌⭐️🚲👶

Hello all!

Welcome back to Nonnatus House for another festive season xx It’s that time of year when we close up our film studios and put the last finishing touches on our brand new stories. But of course, the return of our drama always begins at Christmas time, with our brand new special extended episode!! ❤️🎄🎄🎄

The Christmas Special episode was first included in the Call the Midwife calendar in 2012 – and these episodes, from the very beginning, have formed a key link in time between each season of our drama.

Each season of Call the Midwife moves in real time – one year in history for each season – and the Christmas Special follows this real-time pattern by falling in between each series. So the last time you saw our Nonnatuns was the Autumn of 1967, at the end of season 11. At Christmas, we’ll see them at the end of that same year. Then our season 12 will bring them into the Spring of 1968.

Although the Christmas episode might feel very different from other episodes, it nonetheless moves our characters’ stories forward in real time like all of our normal seasons do. In the past, we’ve featured important character developments at Christmas time: weddings – illnesses – issues – events - joys – tragedies.

So we advise you always to make sure to catch our festive story if you want to stay up to date with our Nonnatun team every year!

This very cosy photograph is taken behind the scenes on the upcoming Christmas Special. Our dear Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) has a full house this year – and particular excitement amongst the residents… don’t miss it!!

Call the Midwife returns with a brand new Christmas Special, and series 12 in 2023 xx
