This decorative mosaic which would have been set into the dining room floor in Pompeii shows a grinning skeleton holding two Askoi or wine jugs.

While putting a skeleton on your dining room floor today might seem a bit odd, for the Romans, it was completely normal. This is because the skeleton reminded them to seize the day, or 'carpe diem' as the Romans used to say. In this dining room, the skeleton would have served as a reminder to enjoy the meal while they could. In ancient Rome, food and wine played a big part in the afterlife as well.

See this wonderful mosaic and much more on display in until 12 January only. Booking essential.
