Building number sense is the most important part of becoming a proficient mathematician.

Unfortunately, the curriculum is so crammed, that there isn't always time to really explore these skills in school.

Making sure children can use number bonds, can double and half, can round and adjust are skills that we spend time embedding as they are the foundation of all maths.

The younger these skills are secure, the more confident mathematicians we create.

I've been contacted recently by lots of parents looking for 11+ support.

One request asked about my “success rate”.
This got me thinking. If by success rate you mean the percentage of children I tutor who pass the test, I don’t know. I haven't worked it out.

Why not? Because that isn’t how I measure success.

For me, success is a child walking into the test feeling confident, prepared, and proud of the effort they’ve put in.

Success is a family empowered to choose the right path, even if that means opting out of grammar school knowing that they have given their child the opportunity. Even if you can pass the test, it is not the right choice for all children.

Does that mean tuition and the preparation is wasted? Of course not. Spatial awareness, problem-solving, rich vocabulary, and efficient maths methods - are invaluable, no matter the exam outcome.

So, what is my success rate? 100%.
Success in giving families choices.
Success in helping ALL children thrive.

Have you used these base 10 frames?

I got my set for a very reasonable price on Amazon. Definitely recommend them to anyone who has young learners.

Does working at a desk make you learn more effectively?

We don't think so.

We work wherever the child feels comfortable. Today it was on the rug, using a writing slope to lean on.

She did some great maths thinking.

Why has this child got a rubber elasticated 'toy' around his arm?

Proprioceptive Input

Pulling, pushing, or stretching gives the muscles and joints feedback that helps the body feel organised and calm.

Feeling calm helps him to focus.

We have a range of fidget 'toys' that children are trained to use to support their different needs.

So proud of this child!

We've been working on subitising and spotting numbers rather than counting them one by one. Today she grabbed a handful of cubes and knew there were 4, she knew that left 6 on the table. She then double checked and recognised it was 3 and 3.

It is so important to get this 'number sense' secure early as it is the foundation to all maths knowledge.

Why do we offer more group sessions than 1:1?

More interaction, more confidence, more support, more opportunities to thrive!

Group tuition encourages collaboration, communication and healthy challenge as well as the opportunity to work independently.

In our groups, everyone still has their own targets to work towards. We can all be doing the same activity but this is adapted for each child.

We can also play games. It's not much fun playing against your tutor, knowing they know all the answers.

At Our Thriving Minds, we want children to find tuition enjoyable, build their confidence and help them thrive.

Get in touch to see which groups currently have spaces.

Don't forget we have one space left in our SATS preparation classes on a Monday at 5:45 or Wednesday at 5:30.
