Maths is not a spectator sport. The only way to understand maths is to be curious, ask lots of questions, challenge yourself and keep practising. Have the confidence to have a go and if it's not right, find out why. That's a great way to develop skills and deepen understanding.

It might be the Christmas holidays. but for Year 11s it is worth investing in some revision time. As a starter for maths, how about grabbing the subject spec, or your last set of mocks, and ranking each topic by confidence level? For a little more challenge, now could be a good time to focus on topics associated with those tricky high-scoring questions towards the end of exam papers.

It's so rewarding when students do well, so how about this for great progress? This is a fantastic example of hard work paying off, coupled with a determination to succeed. During our tuition session, this student asked lots of questions to make sure she understood the topic as well as she possibly could and we did plenty of practice with different types of exam style questions. I was delighted to receive this feedback from her mum.

When it comes to maths, there's nothing like a bit of self-belief and confidence. Here's a gem of a quote from one of my year 9 students, which was worth capturing and sharing.

It's been a busy few weeks, but now I have said goodbye to my Y11s and maths GCSEs are behind us for another year, I can say that they have all worked incredibly hard, put in the hours and kept going even when they didn't feel like it. What a fantastic effort!

I received this lovely message from one of the parents last week. When maths skills improve, so does confidence. It's particularly effective when combined with curiosity, increased understanding and time to practise.

Don't let predicted grades be your ceiling! There are lots of maths revision techniques to consider to best suit your style and it's not just about doing lots of past papers. It should be much more varied, engaging and beneficial than that.

Maths is as much about confidence as it is about tackling the gaps. It takes confidence to face the topics you'd rather ignore and to start to ask questions. A page of ticks is great, but the focus should also be on the ones you got wrong. That's where the new learning will take place.

Young people are sitting the 11+ entrance exam today. I find it's often useful to set a goal with my students and agree what we need to do in order to achieve that goal. Here are some thoughts from one of my students. After all of their hard work and preparation, I'm sending good wishes to all of my students who are sitting their 11+ today.
