Case Study: How a Simple After-School Club Grew Into a Lasting Partnership at Christ Church Primary School, Surbiton 23/06/2026

What happens when a school doesn't just book an after-school club... but builds a partnership?

Two years ago, Christ Church C of E Primary School in Berrylands started working with Beyond Blocks through our LEGO Robotics after-school clubs.

Today, we run two weekly clubs at the school, many of the children have progressed into our higher-level programmes, and some are now on the pathway towards robotics competitions.

But what makes our partnership special is that it goes beyond the clubs themselves.

Whenever we discover funding opportunities, equipment programmes or new initiatives that could benefit our partner schools, we make sure they hear about them. That approach helped Christ Church secure funding for an additional robotics day, allowing even more pupils to experience hands-on engineering and programming.

We believe schools deserve more than a provider who turns up and runs a session.

They deserve a partner who is invested in helping their STEM provision grow.

A great start to the school fair season this morning!

We had a huge Beyond Blocks table at Our Lady Immaculate, packed with robots from Makerzoid United Kingdom, LEGO robots and Star Wars models for children to explore, build and play with.

One comment we heard several times throughout the afternoon, including from members of staff, was that there had never been a stand quite like ours at the fair before. Rather than simply looking at something, children were invited to get hands-on, experiment and play.

Some of the children arrived at our stand at the start of the fair and only left when it was time to go home, 3 hours later!

And that's exactly what Beyond Blocks is all about. We believe the best learning happens when children are actively involved, following their curiosity and learning through play.

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello and join in the fun.

We'll be back in action next week at the Tolworth Juniors Summer Fair, so if you missed us today, there'll be another chance to come and see what we're all about.

Are robots the future for sports?

This week, with the World Cup in full swing, we discussed the concept of robots in sport. Would it be as much fun having robots compete in human type sports? What would be the benefits and downsides if this happened?

We built some boxers and got them warmed up in the gym, then once they were fully trained they faced off against each other for the ultimate showdown.

The children worked on improving their defence and attack, adding crazy boxing gloves and the extra movement abilities, then went at it.

Interestingly, at least in the class that I taught, this hands-on example of robot sports got the children to realise that maybe robosports could still be as competitive and fun as human sports, and some of the children agreed that using robots could reduce risks for humans.

What do you think?

It's Summer fair season and the Beyond Blocks team are gearing up for 3 weekends of school and community fairs.

Today you'll find us at Our Lady Immaculate in Tolworth, where Louie and Andy and some of our excellent students will be joined by our friends from Makerzoid United Kingdom

Come and get hands on with some robots, build some models, check out our Star Wars display or just say hello.

Next week we'll be at Tolworth Juniors and the week after we're back at Berrylands Summer Festival

Can we use robots in sports to reduce the danger for humans?

That's what we were discussing this week at our after school clubs where the children were looking at combat sports and discussing if it would be better to remove humans from danger by having robots doing it instead.

Would this still count as a sport? Would it still be exciting?

Then we got down to the business of training our robot pugilists, by having them work out, Rocky-style, on a punchbag with automated counting to let us know when the robot was ready to do battle!

Check out the use of the sensor-operated counting variable in the back!

So what do you think? If two robots were battling it out in a ring, would you watch?

Come back tomorrow to see how the robots got on in the ring...

What a fantastic day the team had running sessions in the beautiful village of Goring on Thames today at this year's The Gap Festival

It was our first time there and we held 3 sold out sessions in the Village Hall.

It never gets old seeing children building LEGO robots for the first time and watching them come alive as they write code.

Thanks to the organisers for having us and we can't wait to return in future!

Our senior competition students have been playing with the VEX Robotics IQ kit this season and we love it!

We'll be taking our creation out to the World Robot Olympiad UK regionals in a few weeks but here's a little look at what it can do with its AI camera.

We're going to be seeing a lot more VEX kit in Beyond Blocks next year, so if you want to start playing with this with us, keep your eyes on www.beyondblocks.co.uk

We're incredibly proud of the partnership we've built with Our Lady Immaculate Catholic Primary School in Tolworth

This year marks our 4th year supporting the school with the delivery of Computing and Design & Technology through our hands-on robotics programme. As part of their PPA provision, we work with children across the school, helping them develop problem-solving, teamwork, resilience, engineering and programming skills through exciting practical challenges.

What started as a school looking for a way to bring Computing to life has grown into a long-term partnership that allows hundreds of children to experience the joy of designing, building and programming their own robots.

You can see a little of the work we've been doing together here:

https://oli.kingston.sch.uk/Lego-Robotics/

We love working closely with schools to create engaging learning experiences that support the curriculum while giving children opportunities to think creatively, solve problems independently and discover what they're capable of.

We still have a small number of spaces available for local schools looking to enhance their Computing, DT or STEM provision during the 2026-27 academic year. If you'd like to explore how Beyond Blocks can support your school through PPA delivery, enrichment days or curriculum-linked robotics lessons, we'd love to hear from you.

The first of our Summer Camps is now ready for booking and it's BIG...

For the last two summers we've challenged children to build a giant custom Star Destroyer, a 15,000 piece model.

This year we wanted to go bigger, so now your doubling the challenge. It's no longer one big Star destroyer we're building but TWO!

🚀 Two giant Star Destroyers
🚀 Over 25,000 pieces
🚀 Two teams competing to finish first

This summer's Big Build will see one team take on the mighty ISD Aggressor, a 15,000-piece custom model packed with incredible detail.

Meanwhile, the opposing team will tackle the enormous Eclipse-class Star Destroyer, one of the biggest Star Wars-inspired brick models ever produced.

Over two weeks, builders will work together, solve problems, organise their construction effort and bring these gigantic ships to life.

At the end of the camp, both models will take part in a stop-motion space battle before going on public display at the Southend National Brick Event.

It's one of our favourite events of the year and we can't wait to see which team finishes first.

Suitable for ages 7-14.

Booking is now open at https://beyondblocks.co.uk/holiday-sessions/
