We have been to a gorgeous new group today called Tiny Tweeties with Northern Lights Early Years Stronger Practice Hub : North East 🐦😍
It was such a lovely, welcoming group and covered phase 1 phonics which is crucial for supporting the children's learning and development!
Phase 1 phonics is the first stage of phonics teaching. Its main purpose is to develop children’s listening 👂and sound-awareness skills before they begin learning specific letter sounds.
Purpose:
Develop children’s ability to listen carefully and distinguish between sounds.
Encourage children to notice and copy sounds.
Build awareness of sounds in the environment, music, rhythm and spoken language.
Prepare children for learning grapheme–phoneme correspondences (letters and their sounds) in later phonics phases.
Develop children’s oral language and vocabulary.
Benefits:
Improves auditory discrimination—being able to hear differences between sounds.
Supports communication and listening skills.
Helps children develop confidence in speaking and making sounds.
Builds foundations for blending and segmenting when formal phonics begins.
Supports later reading and spelling development.
Makes children more aware of the sounds within spoken words, preparing them for literacy.
Phase 1 typically includes activities such as environmental sounds, instrumental sounds, body percussion, rhythm and rhyme, alliteration, voice sounds, and oral blending and segmenting.
