Silksworth Heritage Group was formed to study the rich mining and social history of the village with the use of photographs, presentations and meetings.

In the late 1980’s, Vera Stevens, of Seaburn, was commissioned by the Wearside Historic Churches to compile a study of Silksworth Church and Community. She began to show slides of her work. It was at one of these presentations in North Street Methodist Church hall that Pat Burns, the present Chairperson, spoke to her and she remarked that Silksworth was steeped in history.
