Being Human Festival Sunderland We're organising a series of public talks in Sunderland as part of the annual, nation-wide Being Human Festival.

On this day in 1547 Edward VI, aged 9 years old, was crowned at Westminster Abbey. Edward, the son of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour, was the third monarch of the Tudor dynasty and England's first monarch who was raised as a Protestant.

On this day in 1674 England and the Netherlands signed the Treaty of Westminster, ending the Third Anglo-Dutch War. A provision of the agreement transferred the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam to England and it was renamed New York.
What's your thoughts on how this event changed the face of The British Empire and latterly The USA?

Hi guys,
Looks like Fresher's Faire has gone incredibly well this year, as we have 37 new members! However, I feel as if it is necessary to resolve a slight confusion before it gets too out of hand. The History Society will be starting properly next Thursday, and running as a weekly event, while the History Lab runs on a monthly basis. I will also update this post with further information about where the History Society is being held.

Hey everyone,

I know it has been a long time since there was a post on here, however, this was mainly due to the fact that the last Lab was in April.

I would just like to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported me for this year. We took a big gamble this year and rather than just run the lab once a month, we decided to join the lab with a society element. It has definitely been tough at times but with the help of the rest of the committee I think it has been a successful year! I hope everyone has enjoyed the labs that have been put on.

I wish next year's committee all the best, good luck guys!

Hey Everyone,

I would just like to thank everyone who turned up last night. There was an incredible turn out for the Lab. I personally think that it was one of the best lectures that we have had in the past few years. I would like to extend some thanks on behalf of the rest of the society committe to Professor David, who gave the amazing lecture last night. Also the food was amazing, i would highly recommend Arabesque restaurant here in Sunderland - great service and authentic food, what more could you ask for!

There is no Society get together tonight as the lab was last night but there will be a quiz and games night next Thursday (21st April) at 5pm. Room number to still be confirmed.

APRIL HISTORY LAB TALK!!!!!

This is a big event for us as we have a visiting lecturer from Manchester as we would love it if as many people as possible to turn up.

The Lab will be on Wednesday 13th April (first week back) at 5pm in Priestan building room 118. Our guest lecturer is Professor Rosalie David from Manchester University. The lecture title is "Pharmacy in Ancient Egypt: Recent Researches" and will describe a major Leverhulme Trust-funded project they have pursued, which has looked at the evidence for a science-based pharmaceutical tradition in ancient Egypt.

Everyone who is a member of a Sunderland University Sport or Society - and has a membership card [must have on entry] - is welcome to come along for free. If you are not a member then the Lab will cost £2. Everyone is welcome.

We are also going along to Arabesque, Sunderland's Egyptian restaurant after the lecture at 6pm and then onto the Cooper Rose for drinks afterwards. If you would like to join us at the restaurant could you please comment below so that we can have an idea on numbers before we book closer to the date.
